Interesting Radio 4 program on golf course manners..

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06tvgnv

David Mitchell ends his look at the state of modern manners in the bar at Chipping Sodbury golf club. The older members reflect ruefully on the demise of the jacket and tie. It is, they argue, all about standards - and they're falling. So has everything really gone wrong with our manners?

Speaking a someone who could not give a rats ass if someone is wearing a jacket or tie or not and views people going on about falling standards as the incoherent ramblings of the elderly and insane, can you give me a heads up if this program will wind me up?

Thank you.;)

I recall playing at a local course years ago on what was probably the hottest day of the year. went into the bar after to get a round of drinks for all 4 players and was told that as I wasn't wearing a tie I had to go to the other end of the bar (about 10 feet from where I was standing) as it was club policy. I moved the few paces required and the same barman asked what I wanted to drink!

No it won't, or at least it shouldn't ;). Nothing surprising really or likely to annoy anyone as I recall.

I listened to all the programmes and they are very good and entertaining. Interesting historical and sociological stuff about why we have "manners" and different views about what they are and what they mean.

Manners maketh the man as they say. I was taught the value of please and thank you as a nipper. As for jacket and ties in the 19th, a rather outdated value in my opinion, although if that's what a club insist on, manners say you adhere to their dress code if you're a visitor

Personally I'm not a jacket and tie man. But have played rugby where jacket and tie is a requirement to go in the clubhouse after the game. Unless there is a bit of a do on in the clubhouse I'm quite happy to sit in the spike bar with my golf shoes on (cleaned ofcourse) going over the round with my PP's and a pint of San Miguel!

The only club I am aware of that still has a rule of jacket and tie in a particular bar is Woodsome Hall. Last time I was there that bar was empty. Don't they say that manners makith the man nothing about jacket and tie there.

My old course (Hoebridge) is a public course with about 400 members. Nothing posh and while we have a club jumper there is no tie or coat. The clubhouse is absolutely rammed at all time and they had to refurb and expand it. You will be lucky to find a place on weekends when the families come in. There are Scrabble, monopoly sets that kids can play while waiting for Dad to come back. There are 3-4 TV sets with some sports on that you can watch while comparing scores. You will Mum's catching up while their kids are getting lessons. And since the refurb, the food has been very good. So keeps the crowds coming in even when the weather is not the best..
