Now don't get me wrong, I like Radar and his contribution to the Sky Sports team. I think he's witty and knowledgeable and there is no doubt that he adds a certain bit of light hearted humour to the proceedings. I agree that Sky, even with the numerous adverts interrupting the coverage are the best that we currently have. I agree that they offer the consumer the best choice to watch golf, not that they really have any competition on this side of the Atlantic.

What Mr Riley I don't agree with is your blatant plug of Sky Sports all over your GM feature. I also don't agree with your backhanded swipe at the BBC. I also don't agree with your flippant dismissal of the BBC commentary team. I for one actually love dear old Peter's ramblings, I actually find stories about "Fred the dog" funny, it appeals to my sense of humour! I like the way he relates to club golfers "shooting his or her best ever round in the club championship.! I like his tone and his mannerisms. Basically, I like the cut of his jib!

Mr Riley I like your role on the Sky Sports team however your not fit to lace Mr Alliss boots in the commentary box. That of course is only my opinion, I'm sure others will differ.

Stick to what you do well without lowering yourself to take cheap pot shots at the opposition, especially when they're more experienced and as I say in my opinion better!

I would like to second this motion! There's room for both of the (Sky & Beeb) and it's a shame we don't see more of the Beeb.

100% agree with you Craw.

Sky do a great job but, just like there is room on the menu for salmon and steak so there is room for Sky and the Beeb.

Just to add I thought it was a strange editorial decision for GM to print such a slanted piece. Can't imagine that MikeH would be too impressed if, during their coverage of the Open, the Beeb gave airtime to a Golf World journo who then used that as an opportunity to take a cheap shot at GM.

I thought it was a rather strange article in the magazine as well. It read like an advertising feature.

Agree with you there (and with Craw's post). Riley's 'page' is usually one of the first I read when the latest edition of GM hits my doormat, but couldn't understand where that one came from.

Peter Alliss is a doddery old fart who would be great sitting in the clubhouse by the fire telling stories - but rubbish as a commentator.

He used to be better (in the days when there was no choice).

Very succinct Craw, and in total agreement.

Alliss does lots of things off the cuff and effortlessly so. A gaggle of ducks and ducklings waddling over the course, he'll commentate on that, as if their going to work or something - brilliant.

Sky's version would be the stats on the previous waddle being a new personal best time, if they went via the fairways in regulation, and on and on........

If Radar is still being employed into his eighties, I would be most surprised. Room for both, as you say.

Surely there’s room for a doddery old fart commentator, in a game for doddery old farts;)

As nice a man as Allis is, he does make quite a few errors when commentating these days.

Got to admit I thought the plugging and loyalty was taken a bit to far, But I have to say i cannot for the life of me stand Peter Allis and the BBC commentary team I just can't.

I attended "An evening with Blowers" a few years back. Henry Blofeld sits on stage and relates anecdotes from his life for an hour or two, takes questions etc. It was fun, but I did rather get the impression that if you saw him in a bar you'd say hello, he'd be charming and witty, buy you a drink and have a chat. Then after half an hour or so you'd nip to the loo, and escape via a window.

I wonder if Alliss is a bit like that? I love listening to him on the TV though.

I like Sky golf coverage, and I think Ewen Murray and Rob Lee are particularly good. I can't stand Radar Riley who I regard as a total plonker who rarely says anything worth hearing and would be better staying quiet a lot more. I understand that a few publicans along the A30 share that view.

Golf at the BBC is dead and buried. Peter Alliss has reached the stage where he can say what he likes and doesn't care what anyone thinks.

It's not just golf that's dead and buried on the BBC. I'd wager that The Open will be next on the list for the BBC to let slip from it's grasp. Many other sports have suffered the same fate. Test match Cricket used to be covered by the BBC. It died a death when England were in amongst the also rans of world cricket. I wonder how the BBC managed to pay to be host broadcaster at the Olympics..... of course they declined the same opportunity at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, still not sure who's actually got that one.

Anyway, back on topic, Radar is a bit of a plonker at times, but having spoken to him at the Dunhill a few years back he's not as bad as some ;)

I like Radar a lot, and he will say hello and have a chat if you say hello to him whilst he's walking the fairways. Really nice guy. Peter Alliss is different but equally as good. Alliss's comments are not as technical, and he does say the odd very wrong thing, but the guy brings golf down to the club players level.

As for diss-ing the opposition... sorry but it says more about the person making the comment. Let your own performance do the talking, and let your audience judge you on that, not your sniping.
