I'm not one for chopping and changing clubs but I decided to take a punt on a new R1 when a black version came up for a good price before Xmas. After 3 rounds I sold it on.

Performance with the stock shaft was so-so , not better in any respect really to my old driver. I know given some time and perhaps a different shaft it may have been different but above all else I didnt like the sound it made! Loud and high pitched it just didnt suit my ears at all.

Overall quite a disappointment after really high expectation. Serves me right for not testing out first.:(

It took me a while to get used to it but now it goes great - never really noticed the noise and no one has commented on it whilst playing.

Certainly nothing like those old square Nike drivers which made an awful sound

Mine just makes a sort of tink sound, same as many other modern drivers! I am personally more concerned about how far and how straight a driver hits the ball, rather than what it sounds like! :D

I hear you, if it was just the sound alone then I would agree but the club also felt and to a lesser extent looked different to what I have been using for several years. I'm looking for a club that can build and improve on what I already have.

I'm not knocking the club as such it just wasn't for me (off the shelf) and because of the sound as well I thought better leave it and move on. Nothing ventured nothing gained. I will probably get fitted next time though, its taught me a valuable lesson that the shaft and club itself does need to suit you. I took a calculated gamble staying with the brand I already use and a stiff shaft albeit a completely different brand. Second Aldila stiff that I couldn't get on with. I use a Fujikura in my current bat and it feels great. Just fancied advancement because my current driver is 2007 that's all really.

For once I agree completely.

The R1 has a distinctive but inoffensive noise. The Nike SQ drivers were an embarrassment- You couldn't use them at the range for fear of putting people off.

Williamalex1's driver has an amazing loud noise. PIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNG- but I keep forgetting the model.

Number 1 in the crazy loud noise charts goes to....... Nicklaus Air Draw.

Didn't someone do some testing a while back and, at the time, the G10 was the loudest on the market..? Loud enough to potentially cause deafness..?
Obviously a few years ago though, I always found Cobra drivers to be ear-splitting.
Looks, sound and feel are important to how well you use a club. If you're mentally bracing yourself for the extreme noise you can't be concentrating fully on the shot..

I bought a R1 in the Xmas day special for £100 from GD and I managed to hook the crap out of my first two drives and only managed to find the sweet spot a few times.

This week I swapped the shaft for a Miyazaki JDL and it performed admirably. Just to double check I put the stock shaft back in for the last hole, two big hooks.

Sound wise if you miss the middle it sounds like you've hit the ball with a wooden block. Hit it out of or near the middle and it's fine.

The RBZ sounds better however the flight and distance with the R1 is much better for me. As long as it goes long and straight I'm not too worried about the sound

The few times I heard (or used) the R1, I always thought the sound was ok - if slightly 'plasticky'.

Had a Sasquatch; used to go to range session with a guy with a 'Lucky 13'; still got a Cobra L4V head that was banned from the range of the mate I bought it off (and had an earlier Cobra); and gone back to an FT3! So I guess I'm not particularly 'picky' about Driver sounds! I do prefer the 'squwack' sound over the 'clang' one though!

The G10 does make a hell of noise when you hit it right, not enough to put me off tho. I'm just a bit dissapointed when it only goes 200yrd ish

So why change clubs? Especially at your handicap without a CF

Was at the range tonight minding my own business when a guy comes in the next bay. Didn't pay much attention but could see that he had an R1 with him.

He was hitting irons at first and I'd sort of forgotten he was there … then THWACKKKKK

Had totally forgotten / erased the sound the R1 made, but in a small enclosed range and with somebody trying to take the cover off the ball, it was deafening! Genuinely left my ears ringing as I was hitting my last few shots?!

Feel a bit bad now about taking mine down the range all of last year!

My driver makes a bit of a pingy noise followed by a cry of "oh for **** sake" then finally a loud cry of "Fore!!".

Our seniors' captain has a cobra thing that sounds like you are catching a house brick in a bin lid, noise is incredible.

A young guy was at the range with his dad in the bay next to me, he wasn't that great but had some great clubs (typical spoilt golf kid) He had this driver that was unbelievably loud. It was horrible. when i left i saw it was an R1. I was tempted to buy one but now ill pass.
