Hey guys took up golf last year and managed about 4 rounds before I was sent to Afghanistan (I'm in the army) now I'm back I've finally spent a bit of cash getting what I hope are some decent clubs and I've finally got a bit of time off work to get serious about golf I've joined my local 9 hole course for now it's a mix of par 3s and par 4s I've obviously not got a handicap yet but I'm wondering am I better to have lessons and constantly hit the range or pay more in order to get my handicap down for when I eventually start to score 3 cards, just curious as ot what people find the mat important and best ways are to lower their handicap.
Cheers guys

Welcome back Karl.

Personally I would get a recommendation for a decent teaching Pro, and get some lessons booked. If you tell us where you are based I am sure you will get some recommendations on here.

Hiya. A good way to spend some of your Afghan money is on decent clubs  So that's done and for me it would now be about lessons to at least really get the basics correct early on. Plenty of practice between lessons is required and probably a blend of range and course practice. No reason why that can't be entirely done on your local 9 hole course until you or your coach feels it isn't providing enough of a challenge and/or variety of holes and hazards etc.

Good luck.

My nephew's experience of golf was in Afghan when they came across a wedge left behind and some balls. They decided to smack them off the sangar (sp?) and Brandon stood too close and got smacked in the face. Broken nose and 2 black eyes and he's not keen to take the sport up!!

Which 9 hole club are you playing at Karl?
If its Bolton Open and you live in the vacinity i know a decent lad who lives in Walshaw.

Rick Shiels at trafford golf centre comes highly recommended, think theres some offers on for fathers day so could bag yourself a decent deal on a few lessons.
But also get out a play a bit too dont worry about waiting to get your cards in, put them in as you are and the h?cap will come down as you get better.

Lessons, schmeshions, just spunk loads of money on new clubs as that's guaranteed* to lower your handicap.

* Not actually guaranteed, but it will make you feel so moneysupermarket ;)

I went to TGC for an open day a while back. I was having lessons, but thought I'd see if there was anything my own pro missed.

Rick is top notch, quite a few work collegues have used him for lessons. Also a few forum members local to Trafford Centre who are members so mates rates for a knock.

Never spoke before but good to know your home safe mate.

I would say lesson, range, range, practise, practise, play, play, practise practise practise, lesson and just keep on it your handicap will come down in time but if you've got plenty of leave booked hammer the time playing but most of all make sure you enjoy it

Ive had about a dozen or so lessons from Rick and I have gone from 100+ to high 80's shots in a year and I only get to play every other week. He has turned me from a huge slice to a lovely draw and consistency has gone up loads.
You won't be disappointed if you have lessons with him.

Course management definitely. When I started to take 4h - pw- pw into greens I dropped so many shots. Rather than D - 6 with a high possibility of a hook/slice !

Hi Karl. It looks like you are off to a good start by getting yourself set up with some good kit from your Afghan money (my last lot got swallowed by a divorce). Like has been said already, get some lessons and go from there. But you must stick with what you are being told to do, even if it appears to not be working straight away. Get plenty of practice in and spend time learning to chip and putt as that is a quick way to get your scores down, as you do not see many low handicap golfers that are not good around the green.
