Numpty question most probably, but here goes.....

My handicap is currently sitting at 12.5 but inactive.
I've been told by the secretary at Cooden that I will have to hand 3 cards in to activate it again, which is what I expected.
Thing is, say I shot 3 terrible rounds of way over my handicap, would it reactivate with what my secretary thinks it should be, or would I just go out .1 for each of the three bad rounds, therefore putting me out to 12.8?
Hope that makes sense. It did in my head.

I will probably be in the same boat soon, not played any qualifiers since last year. When I join a club who knows what will happen! Last time out I did the three cards and ended up being given the handicap stated on HDID...

Play the 3 rounds honestly and if theres a big difference speak to the Handicap Secretary again

The previous handicap needs to be considered but not stuck to

There are a few tricks that Handicap Secretaries still have that can make life easier for everyone

If your handicap is just inactive, it really only means you can't win comps until it becomes active.
Putting 3 cards in to reactivate it will mean you can
Those 3 cards should still affect your handicap so 3 rank cards should see you up to 12.8 and any cuts should be applied (unlikely I know)

Not a numpty question :) And the answer also differs if you are in an SGU club (which you aren't).

For you the requirement is to return 3 Q scores (supplementals/handicap cards are Q scores for this purpose) and your current handicap will be adjusted by those scores ie up or down in the normal way using SSS out of competition or CSS if you played in a competition (club rules will govern if this is permitted).

Your handicap status will change after the 3rd score to (c) which is the same as the old active....but let's not worry about that side of things.

Should have checked whether this is a new club or not as I think different things happen if new club v old

Because you mentioned a club I ass-u-me-ed you have changed

Depending on how long its been inactive [I don't know how long that should be, am sure Duncan does] it shouldn't need reassessing. I'd hope his inactive H/Cap went with him only to become active as Duncan says earlier.

in the case of moving clubs the handicap's status doesn't change; if you leave a club and join another within 6 months your previous handicap, and it's status, are allocated at the new club.

when you leave a club your handicap doesn't go inactive - it ceases to exist! however, in the above situation it miraculously returns as it was!

if you leave a club and join a new one over 6 months later. but less than 12 months, the handicap is allocated at it's previous level but the status is not (c), cards would be required to regain the status.

over 12 months then you are required to get a new handicap allocation which will involve submitting cards, and the new clubs handicap committee are also required to take into account your previous handicap history. the newly allocated handicap will have a (C) status

if you stay at the same club but your handicap goes inactive, it can be inactive for any period of time (no limit) and it's status would only change when you submit 3 Q scores in a handicap year.

Thank you Duncan

I think thats all the possibilities covered

My post was based on the new club after 12+ months which was what happened to me

Situation is that I left Crowborough Beacon about a year ago, and have not been a member anywhere since.
I'm hopefully going out tomorrow, weather permitting, and will hand my first card in.
Hopefully it won't be too dire

Thanks for all the input lads

Bugger. Hosing it down here this morning. Hope it clears before 11.30.
Good thing is, the wind has died right off.
18 over will do. I could do a lot of damage off an 18 handicap
;););)

the 'about' matters, and it's relationship with the date you joined Cooden.

if the gap was less than 1 year then you effectively have (or should have if people are following the rules) an inactive 12.5 that will be adjusted to the 3 scores you put in as if they were competition scores ie if you put in 3 x 18+ then it will be 12.8 (c)
