Hi guys

Ok I played yesterday in a comp scored 2 under my handicap so I went from 27.1 to 26.3 I have been playing under my handicap for a while now.

Today a friendly game with 2 friends I shoot a 85 gross 10 under my new handicap of 26. So i submitted my card for handicap review. My mates have said to me I should not have submitted the card as it was only a friendly game and should have waited until a comp as the majors of my golf course are coming soon.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on this was I right in submitting the card or should I have waited ???

cheers

Chris

you can't submit it.

You can only submit a card in one of 2 ways
1 , after a qualifying comp home or away.
2, a supplementary card , but you have to tell the pro in advance, can't do anything in retrospect.

Great shooting though, that handicap will tumble very soon

You need to declare in the pro shop before hand if you intend to submit a supplementary card as far as I'm aware. You can't just hand in a card because it's a good score.

OK thanks for clearing that up its all confusing so I guess my Handicap secretary will ignore it then, I was just being honest all this handicap stuff is so confusing.

And thanks best game of my life so far :) felt so good

There are a couple of things here

1. Are you new to golf and have you recently been given your HC ? If so then the HC committee can monitor and indeed apply HC changes if they decide that your initial HC wasn't reflective of ability so putting the card to the HC committee is good

Also the HC committee can use any card you give them during the Annual HC review

So whilst there is no immediate HC change from the card it can be useful and the HC committee won't ignore it

I have been playing for 2 years and only been a member of my club for a year my initial handicap was 26 then rose to 27 in that summer I have played a lot of winter golf and have got better but my club had no handicap tournaments in the winter so my handicap stayed at 27. The first reduction I had was yesterday 2 under Par net which brought me down to 26. I am so confused as to what to do with cards when I play normally as I do tend to play better in none comp events. I Feel handing in the card was the right thing to do either way I was just so buzzing shooting my best round :)

Thanks
Chris

Hi Guys

Well I woke up this morning to a email from howdidido and it looks like my Club have submitted the card as I got a 4 shot reduction this morning my new Handicap is 22.3 Wow 5 shot reduction is one weekend. Well my aim this year was to take at least 5 off my Handicap looks Like I have done it. I just hope my good golf continues and I have not shot myself in the foot lol. Heres hoping I can reduce it more. One thing though I have finally got the monkey off my back in getting a Handicap reduction as before I would always blow it on comp days.

Cheers

Chris

they probably shouldn't have submitted it but if you're happy...

Played a match against our handicap secretary yesterday. He is going to start looking at the results of the various roll-ups to get a feel for who is doing what. Don't know how he can use what he finds out from such as roll-ups - but that's what he said he was going to do.

I guess my answer is in what @LP has posted earlier in this thread, I think our handicap sec is primarily looking at the scores of new members and new golfers. We have had a LOT of new members in the last couple of years - mostly coming from other clubs and hence bringing their handicap with them. So he's probably going to be looking to see how their handicap is working and is appropriate for our place.

a question for you, would you have submitted the card if you shot 110?

Well thats the confusion of being a fairly new golfer only been playing 2 years and a member of a club for 1 year is should I be submitting cards in when I am playing on Sundays as we have maybe 2 qualifiers a month in the summer and none in the winter.
So I was looking at the chances of coming down slim if I kept playing badly in qualifiers but playing good on Sunday. So i decided to submit cards on Sunday too even if bad and see what my Club did with them.

I have had no contact from my club as to why they acted on the card I have emailed the Handicap secretary for a explanation.
As I said early I was just being honest as I knew I was contently playing better than 27 but blowing up in Medals and not getting cut.

All this handicap stuff is so confusing lol.

That's why you are supposed to state that you are playing a handicap scoring round before hand.

I think you are allowed to put in 10 supplementary cards a year, but you are supposed to state beforehand not just stick your good scores in.

I'm in my first year of membership and also find some of it confusing. I keep it simple though in that I've never handed in any cards that weren't from an actual club competition that I've entered anyway. I don't really understand this supplementary card business, I kind of thought people would just do that if they hadn't entered enough competitions, but I've been playing about one comp a month so I should be fine I should think.

I thought the point of declaring beforehand was to avoid people only sticking in bad cards and pushing their handicap up.

Why does it matter if someone puts in some good cards and gets their handicap down?

I can see why it might if it came to the difference between cat 1 and cat 2, but not really otherwise.

Yup to that, and the same as phil says. They may keep your cards when it comes to annual hcap review. Why do I say that. Last two nine hole Comps were 19 and 20 points but played the other nine holes and finished with 40 points both times. If that means I get adjusted at the end of the season with a cut then I will take that.

dont be embarrassed by not knowing every rule, you are not the only one. You need to take the positives from a good round, yup you can do it. Good scoring me man.

Other thing for the OP needs to remember is that as well as signing in before going out on the course, even if it is a friendly, it still has to be under full competition rules - ie no gimmes or anything like that. I'm sure he would have, but worth the reminder ...

Because the handicap system is based on all qualifying scores - the good and the bad.

Just out of interest, as I mentioned, I put in my cards from the nine hole comps. What is stopping the hcap sec looking at the full cards of 18 holes and giving a further cut?

Because the handicap system is based on all qualifying scores - the good and the bad.

But primarily the good. If you want an artificially low handicap, be my guest; it only damages your chances of victory.

The handicap system needs to guard against bandits, going up by 0.1 vs how quickly handicaps drop is an example, and so is the requirement to notify the pro shop of the intention to submit a supplementary card.

Honest people see it differently because handicap is a matter of pride rather than an opportunity to cheat.
