I was wondering how many of the par 4s on your course do you have to take a wood/ hybrid for your second shot.

On my course if I hit a decent drive there are 4 that I can't reach with my second shot and this makes it harder to par these holes.

Our 9th is one I dislike 460 yards and I can count on one hand how many times I have parred it .

Our longest is 420 yards and in summer is usually a driver, 7 (ish) iron in. I adverse conditions it can be a hybrid for the 2nd shot but I would think 90% of the field would club the same

Where I live we never get much run on the ball exept for maybe a few months in the summer, this makes our course much harder than the average course, it's always nice to come down in the summer and get 30 yards of run on your ball:thup:

In this cold weather my 2nd shot will be a 3 wood at least 8 times at par 4s :o.

Generally our 1st need at least a hybrid 2nd shot, less in summer if you get a good drive away, our 9th is similar, they are both 450 yards +, other than that I can reach all of the others.

I don't hit a 3 wood or hybrid to try to get to a green with any trouble. I generally hit to approx 100 yards, then hit a whatever wedge to get to the flag. It is much safer and I am much more likely to have a shortish putt for par. This is the best way for me to play as my chipping is not the best.

So when will it be acceptable to choose tees based on ability?

How would a seniors comp play off the yellows or even reds?
Would it make a difference?

Except the major senior comps, many of ours are played off yellows, although it doesn't make a huge difference

Longest par 4 on my home course is 442 yards off the whites and it is generally something like driver, 7 iron for me. But this is my first year as a senior :smirk:

The 1st & 10th off our yellows as they are par 5's off the whites but very long par 4's off the yellows.

Off the whites the 4th can be against the wind and slightly uphill and always plays longer than the yardage, the 11th can be a stretch off the back stones and the 14th if you don't make it over the bunker, so they can be quite challenging but those are the lowest indexes.

We only have 9 par 4's (5 3's, 4 5's), assuming little or no wind I can only get up on 4 of them, and then with nothing less than 6 iron. My decent drive only goes around 200 yards. Really struggling to play off 8, last weekend I was round in 82 gross with 27 putts!

It rather depends on the wind and the amount of run on the fairways, but on average about 7 out of our 10 par 4's off the white tees. We also have 2 very long par 5's that I struggle to reach in 3!

As you get a shot on the hole you could use 3W, 5 iron, wedge and 2 putts.
5 for 4 for 2pts

Ours is a links course and the only danger is a penalty ditch running 3/4 down the left hand side,so I always take driver which I have a shorter shaft in it which is nearly equivalent to a 3 wood, and normally take 5 wood for my second shot which leaves a short pitch and hopefully two puts.

On a flat calm day at Cooden there are no par 4's that I can't reach in two using an iron for my 2nd shot as long as I get a half decent drive away.
But flat calm days down there are as rare as half decent drive days!!
