I have a laptop with windows vista:rofl: it has loads of issues with other progs etc so I'd like to put something else on it, can anyone suggest the next best OP system and how to put it on easily (wiping everything current of course)

thanks

XP I would say is the most stable release of windows.

Get XP disc.
Backup data on HD
Format HD
Install XP
Copy data from backup onto HD

cheers Andy, dont need to back anything up, happy to do a complete re-install......

silly question but I don't know, how much is XP and where do I get it from? (only ever bought pc's installed)

XP is certainly better than Vista imo but W7 is better - provided theres enough Disk and Chip grunt to support it

is that 32 or 64 chip grunts? is that like ram........

it's certainly got a disk.........it's inside the laptop apparently so I cant see how big it is, will it matter:whistle:

Not entirely sure how Vista works, but if you go to the 'Control Panel' and select 'System' then that'll tell yo about the chip. Performance might also indicate relative power.

And selecting 'Computer' in Windos Explorer should show how much disk, and free space you have.

Have you run CCleaner and what are you using for Anti-Virus? Some, like Norton can grb loads of resources at times.

Can you give us the basic specs

Click start
RIGHT click Computer
Left click Properties
a window will open

what is the CPU
How much RAM have you got

that will give me more of an idea

Fragger

Windows 7 is the best option.
I like XP, but as someone said it is now ancient. W7 runs the same core as Vista but it is completely souped up. I am pretty sure that there is a simple W7 upgrade from Vista (alternatively wipe clean and install)

W8 is a mystery and need to see how W8.1 (blue) looks before commenting - though the initial reviews are not great.

BTW, dont forget to set some time aside to learn how W7 works as it is slighty different from Vista.

Good luck

Check your cpu, general rule of thumb ismost processors released from the time of vista on should be 64bit compatible. If you dont intend using more than 4gb ram then 32bit will do grand though.

Honest advice though is buy a new laptop and sell that one.

W8 seems a great option for those with the latest and greatest hardware, the rest of us are better off with 7 IMO.

I had vista running great but it needed a water-cooled desktop to do it :)

Now on 7 and I will not be going to 8 until I get a brand new motherboard, which doesn't look like soon as my rig is way powerful enough, even 5 years after I bought it.
