Just a question based on the other thread...

You are playing a matchplay comp and after teeing off down the middle on the 1st your opponent hits his into the rough.... do you just stand by your ball in the middle of the fairway?

Sam Torrance advocates the 1 man 1 ball approach and i can see the benefit, it must speed up play. That said, providing we're not holding up the group behind i'm happy to help my mate find his ball, providing the compliment is returned of course ;)

I usually never notice if others are helping me or not, I just get on and try to find my ball. If they choose to help or not does not affect me.

I usually muck in and help them find their balls as long as its not going to hold up play for me getting back to mine.

Its a judgement call, sometimes its appropriate, sometimes its not. I just happen to usually deem it appropriate.

it all depends on were they have hit it as i stated before IF in the rough and i had a line on it i would tell them were it was IF they carved it into the dense gorse or thick trees and they had not played a provisional ball when advised to then no,and lets be honest on this subject how many on here hand on heart have actually just gone through the motions of looking for a ball in a match play comp.lost by the person your trying to beatHOPING not to find it.

I can put my hand on my heart and say that I have NEVER looked for a ball in a match play trying not to find it - hoping that no one finds it is a different matter entirely!

do you look with the same intensity if the lost ball is your opponents rather than your own,and i never stated i would not not tell them if i found it BUT you hope you don't that is what i said.

Re: Question for baby....

Intensity .... Is the a new level of searching I have missed. Surely your either looking for it or your not?

Yes, I look properly and I am a pretty good spotter, I would rather win having played fairly and trust that my opponent/s have done the same. If, like you, and I was in the cack and you stood in the middle of the fairway practicing (whether or not I had played a provisional) You'd be on your own when you needed help and definitely you would be looking for someone else to play with next time!

its how you look for it!!! here is a scenario for you, last hole of the club match play knockout, all square, you tee off and hit a ok shot down the right your opponent carves his driver deep into trouble on the left,WHAT IS YOUR FIRST THOUGHT------------

I'm with this old codger, I look for others balls as I would look for my own, up until such point where I notice they are not returning the favour

Re: Question for baby....

For me, looking for an opponents ball is just as much a part of golf etiquette as repairing a pitchmark or holding the flag. To not do so is quite sad but isn't untypical of the attitude of a growing number of people who play golf - I won't call them golfers.

Re: Question for baby....

IF they carved it into the dense gorse or thick trees and they had not played a provisional ball when advised to then no,

If you advised your opponent to play a provisional in Matchplay then you should have lost the hole under Rule 8-1

your implying that it is cheating not to be going head first into the gorse bushes trying to find an opponents ball!!

Not exactly an answer to your question but in the same vein

Quarter final of our 4BBB winter league against 2 x 4 h/cappers. we are one up playing the 17th. we drive straight and true, their first player hits into trees and we can see the ball, the second player hits over to the right and is up against a tree.

The second opponent spends a while looking at his lie etc and I wander over, he says that he is in a hol in the tree roots, and not sure whether its a scrape but is erring on the thought that it isn't. I say that he should tell me what he wants to do as its his place to ask. He says he will play it as it lies as he cant be sure its a drop - I then offer him a free drop if he wants and he declines and they susequently lose to us - that Papyt is what low handicap golf is about - doing the right thing!

So going by the rules, we are playing a match in the early evening with a low setting sun and your on the tee, you hit your drive wayward but cant see it due to the sun and I say "thats in the deep stuff, you may want to hit another". You could claim the hole, therefore the match?

Jeepers there arent half some stupid rules in this game:confused:

who would you sooner play with someone who told you were it had gone and advised you or some one who kept tight lipped and tried to claim the game because rules is rules????

Re: Question for baby....

I believe telling someone where it went is not a problem, but advising them to play another ball, or a provisional is.

so telling someone" it's in the " and them asking " should i play another?" and you saying "do what you want i'm not telling you" is in the spirit of the game?
