Hi
This is my first post, Just starting Golf need to look for a set of clubs +2" in length, looking around different makes but not sure which ones are good, is there a list of ratings for different manufacturers of clubs?

Crikey, morning m8. Just how tall are you ?

There isn't a specific rating for manufacturers, and most would say to get yourself custom fit somewhere like the Belfry is the best bet, where they have a range of manufactueres you can try.

Or go to several demo days, maybe.

Generally most would put a rating sort of like, but by no means specifically :

Top : Mizuno, Ping, Titleist, Taylor Made, Cobra, Callaway, Nike, Wilson Staff, Yonex

Middle : Cleveland, Wilson, Benross, MD, Ben Sayers, Jack Nicklaus

Bottom : Slazenger, Dunlop, Fazer

Personally I'd put Benross up there with the big boys, but that's only coz I got on with them when I had some.

Which is what it boils down to. Make sure you try before you buy, and ignore the name, use what works for you.

Thing is, being tall doesn't mean you necessarily need longer clubs... you need to measure how far your wrist is from the floor etc.

I'm 6'4" and my shafts are only 0.5" longer than standard.

Get yourself fitted, or have a check on the Ping website where they ask you to put all your measurements in. Bear in mind though that each manufacturer is different so what goes with Ping does not mean the same for Mizuno, Taylormade etc.

I can see +2 being OK (you should have seen a guy I joined up with, legs up to his armpits and nothing above).
a club maker has told me (5' 11") that I need +1.25, not done it yet but I'm now conscious that I feel like I'm reaching down!

prepared to be shot down here, but I believe the 'standard' wrist to floor measurement is taken to be 27".

if you're just starting you may not want to lay out on new clubs so one solution is to buy a second hand set, and once you've got that measurement double-checked, get a butt extension (circa £3/club, if they re-use the grip). I don't know what that will do to the way the clubs will play though.

Even plus 1.25" is a lot. I am 6 2 and have plus 1/2", my mate I play with alot is 6 4 and also has plus 1/2" (both fitted by Titleist). If you are plus 1.25 at 5 11, your posture needs changing surely?

I was measured up by teh Mizuno fitter at direct golf and despite the fact that I am 6'1" I am on the border between standard and having shaft half an inch longer.

My advice would be as a newbie to golf to save the money on getting custom fitted clubs and go and have some lessons and talk to your pro. If once he has shown you the correct address position he thinks you can benefit from longer shafts he can advise you from there. Don't get fitted in American Golf as in my experience they are not clued up at all about how to measure you for the right shaft and will try and flog their highest mark up irons irrespctive of your requirements

Is this right? Not trying to pick fault with the advice you were given, and I have experienced good customer service whenever I have visited a direct golf but I don't think you have had a qualified fitter measure you up if this is what you were told. Whatever happened to + 1/4" ? How can you be borderline standard length / 1/2" longer, it doesn't make sense when quarter inch longer clubs are so easily available.

Maybe you meant standard to quarter inch borderline? Just wouldn't like to see you get an incorrect fitting from a regular shop boy.

possibly, but that's what he measured; could just be short arms :D
it was the same as his own measurement so I had a few swings with his 7 (loved that Nippon 950 shaft). once I found where the ground was I was hitting cleaner.

I'd still get it double checked though.

You must be some kind of monster!! ;) ;) :p

I am 6'10" and only have +1.25 and 2*up.

Talking to my pro at my last lesson about new irons he said it may be worth looking at standard length shafts with an increased amount of lie angle so that the ball doesn't get too far away from the body.

He went to a recent training day at Woodhall Spa and they were talking about fitting a 6'7" junior and the only way they could get him to hit consistently was with standard length and +9* of lie angle.

I have some serious club testing to do when I change my irons at the end of August. :) :)
