Evening all,
Here's the story....Brought a mate out today that only took the game up 6 weeks ago....He didnt want to spend alot of money on clubs for fear he didnt take to the game...Signs on he's got the bug.....

He bought his clubs in Sportsworld here in Ireland not sure if ye have them across the pond..I think that they are an English company.....

Anyhooo the driver he got was a Dunlop something or other with a steel shaft and as curiousity got the better of me i had to have a bash.......I used it on all our par 5's and i could not hit a bad ball with it...Everything was straight and in the short stuff and easily 40 yrds past my 3 wood which isnt short......Oh and the most important thing...Price....wait for it €19......How can it be that a driver that cost so little hits the ball so straight and so far when iv tried heaps of more expensive stuff and i just could not get on with them.....

I know it may not have the same level of image in a bag as the big stuff but @ €19 how can you argue with it.

Ive never played with Dunlop because there so cheap and your right its because of the image, however i still bet you dont go out and buy one too because like most of us we would be embarrassed.

Im not sure PJ..... Im tinkering with the idea.....At 19 notes iv spent it on worse.. :D :D

My 60* wedge is a £6 Sports World Dunlop effort. Love the club, so useful in close and I'm not scared to use it in the really crap ground where it'll score up badly.

I used to play with a guy that bought a Dunlop driver out Soccer Sports Direct?? for about £15 and couldn't miss a fairway with it. He also hit it far.
The only drawback was that he would have to buy one every fortnight as it fell to bits after about 6 rounds.
A huge crack developed at the bottom of the clubface.

Do you not have a sense of deja vu kid?

iirc the last time you hit someone else's clubs you ended up buying them. :)

As you said, for 19 sheets it doesn't matter if you throw it in the sea in a couple of months. Do it.

:D :D :D But i suppose for 19 spondoolas its hardly a bank breaker as you say.

Not bad value but I've heard so many people saying the Dunlop and Donnay drivers from these outlets snap or crack so easily so in the longer term I guess it could be a false economy. I wouldn't worry its a usual thing to borrow someone elses clubs and hit them great. You go and get a set on the basis you can use them and three rounds later the battery is dead in them and you're back to slicing and topping like you did with the previous set. We've all been there.

Back in the 80's and early 90's though Dunlop were a top name in golf clubs. I think they got bought by Slazenger originally who then got bought out themselves and golf production was stopped for a while

I've always been a firm believer in using what works for you. My clubs are almost as old as Smiffy but they work for me.

The Dunlop clubs are so cheap that you're really not losing out.

I agree with the longevity issue though. My Dad plays with them and he's forever replacing them.

Starting to get a little sceptical now the more posts i read about cracking....I guess the phrase you buy cheap you buy thrice comes to mind

For the purpose of a joke, I once bought a Dunlop driver for £5 - with the idea of snapping it across my knee in apparent frustration in front of a particular person - the look on his face would have been worth a fiver of anyone's money. The appropriate time to break it was after a vigorously slashed hook - but it never came. Everything straight down the middle. I still have it

A mate of mine plays with a set of Dunlop irons he bought from JJB Sports. He plays off 11. He's a steady golfer and is usually in the money during bounce games. You would be hard pushed to hit your irons better than he does, irrespective of the name on the back of them.
Cheeses me right off

We have a Donnay outlet place near me and lots of golfers started turning up with the dead cheap drivers - my understanding was that the shop would only replace them twice when they fell apart. After that they referred buyers to Head Office!

I hit one or two balls with one and they went quite well but always handed them back quickly in case it was my hit that it disintegrated on!
