Hi all,

Just wondering what some of you find good in terms of Putts Per Round.

I think around 24 Putts Per Round is really good.

Whats your views?

A much misleading number is Putts per Round.
A few years back I played on consecutive days and shot 74 both times.
One round had 33 purse, the other 25.
It's all to do with how many greens in regulation you make and how good your short game is when you don't....
You could take 36 putts and still shoot level par....

24 putts in a round is unheard of where I play...

Guess if you play on small greens it is much more achievable. We have big greens so lot of the time a 2 putt for par is a great achievement.

I am delighted to get 30.

I averaged 31 this year on our course.

However, we have big greens (most 2 clubs from to back) so even greens in regulation doesn't tell the whole story.

Length of puts holed is a good stat to use but not desperately practical playing in normal competitions.

As Imurg and others eluded to, putts per round is a misleading stat on it's own. I missed plenty of greens this morning, but got myself stone dead with a pitch/chip on most of them, therefore only one putt. Had I have hit the greens in reg, I probably would have been in at least two putt, and sometimes three putt country. IMHO, Putts per round only become a viable statistic if you hit all greens in reg.

Today I was 21 over 12 holes, would say fairly typical number of putts for me, somewhere around 2 a hole on average(this includes being on fringe and putting).

Was level par yesterday with 25 putts, only managed to hit 8 greens in regulation and 3 putted one of them.

A few years ago I hit 16 greens in regulation and finished 4 over, on the same course. Failed to get up and down twice and 3 putted twice too.

Stupid game sometimes.

24 putts per round is amazing if you've hit 18 greens in reg. not so good if you haven't hit one.

putts per round is very subjective to the course your playing. the greens at my place are very big, so I'm putting when most would be chipping from that distance

So do I.

As others have said, pretty meaningless stat though. Putts/GIR is much more useful. All the above figure means is that you were likely having an unbelievable day with the wedge around the greens.

Still need to be good putting though....

I had a medal par round a few weeks back with 25 putts. Considering I started with a triple and two other bogies, I had 5 birdies that wasn't anything to do with wedging around the greens.

25 putts was unusual for me and I consider myself a good putter. I usually aim for 30 or less. 24 is ridiculous IMO

Putts per round can be misleading, it is however the simplest to use. Especially with game golf.

I average 1.7 per hole which is around 31 putts. This does really fluctuate dependent on GIR and how on it my short game is.

People who use length of putt get a much better idea but how do you measure it? rough guess?

I pace it off either before or after I putt. Yes it's a rough guide but one stride equals 3ft in my strokesaver days so applying that to putting gets me an average.

I've never really read much into putts per round stats, you know if your putting well or not without having an exact amount. I could go round round the course and get up and down 18 times, so 18 putts and shoot level par. I could also hit every green and have 36 putts and shoot level par. So I have either hit the ball well and not made a putt, or hit it poorly and scrambled well. Not sure which I prefer to be honest.

I like to look at how many putts per green in regulation, that shows me how well I am putting. If I hit 10 greens and have 23 putts that means I have lost 3 shots from bad putting, if I have 18 putts I have picked up a couple of shots from putting well.
