Hi everyone im new to the forum and I need some advice. Just now im a 20 handicap, but I know it could be much lower if I could just sort out my putting. Does anyone have any tips for putting?

cheers.

Get a putting mirror from Izzo, it's agood tool you can take to the course, it will get your shoulders, eyes and ball in correct position then keep your putter head online too.

Generally eyes should be over the ball, you should be rocking the shoulders, absolutely no wrist movement at all.

No one correct style, gotta be comfy though and putt with a nice even rhythm i.e. say under your breath 'Sam' as you take the putter back and 'Snead' as you swing it forward.

Also some good putters say you should only stroke the ball as you breathe out cos if you hold your breath you'll get tense.

Putting's alll about confidence so practice those 3 to 6 footers as much as possible.

Love putting as much as you can. If you don't enjoy putting you'll struggle to get your handicap down. Dedicate as much practice time as you can to it but be sure to enjoy and cherish that practise, think of games and challenges to keep you thirsty - it sounds gay but you have to love putting so much otherwise when you go through a bare patch you'll grow resentful towards it and blame it for your bad scores. Find a putter and keep it - a good putter that instills confidence is a must. REPEAT - I LOVE PUTTING, I AM A GOOD PUTTER AND PUTTING LOVES ME.

Unfortunately the club I'm at does not have a practice putting green (although one will be in place next season), as a result I have really struggled of late, missing too many 6 - 8 footers and 3 putting a lot from 25 feet. Makes the difference between a good and bad score. I try and get out of an evening to practice putting when the course is quiet but not often enough.

20 minutes practicing putting is really a must before starting any medal round.

Golf Monthly's just done a supplement with loads of tips....

Prctice, practice then practice some more.
I endorse Benny's statement, find a putter you like.

I don't claim to be a good putter and would be the last to offer technical advice but a recent new acquisition has lifted my confidence no end.

It takes a long time to become a good putter, talent or not.
I agree with the other guys; find a putter you like and get practising.

There is a lot of talk on here about the amount of putts you "should" be aiming for. There is no magic figure and those of us that hit more greens than our h'cap would suggest are probably having more putts than others. I average 34 (which is not great) but as long as there are more 1 putts and than 3 putts I don't care.

Similar to you RGU. I hit a lot of G.I.R but putting has stank.
Shot 88 with 41 putts.
Played Sunday AM against a player with a far better short game than me and for some reason, probably my competitive streak I managed 33 and played like a demon for 16 holes , if only I could wipe the 2nd and 17th from my card

I use the eyeline putting aid. Sounds similar to the Izzo - it has a mirrored surface to check your eye position and shoulder alignment. It also comes with two guide rails on either side which your putter fits between and you can use to get the feel of the putter going straight back and through.

I always take this out when I am practicing and start by using the guide rails to get the correct feeling. I then take them off and replicate the shot using the mirror all the time to check the basics.

I then putt without the aid at all normally focussing on 6 foot and in (the keys ones you need to make for good scores). To finish with I use two tees on either side of the cup to reduce its width and practice trying to hole out in the smaller target.

Above all though I would advocate 1) getting a putter that feels right for you irrespective of make (and if possible price) and ensure you try it out on a proper green and not just a mat and 2) get a putting lesson. You can have all the gadgets and the best putter money can buy but if you a re using a flawed technique you will never hole your full quota of makeable putts

I follow some advice I had from a mate and try to practice this every week. (this or something close to it may also be in the GM guide)

space balls around a hole at a putter's length from the hole (I use 8 because they'll just fit in the hole). hole all of these. if you miss any start again and keep going until you putt all 8 with no misses. this has now established your kill zone, which is about 5 - 6 ft in diameter - not exactly a small target.

space pairs of balls at 6 ft intervals the length of the putting green from a single hole (you need to be bloody minded and selfish about this). putt all of these bearing in mind that any you hole are a bonus as the objective is twofold - (1) you will realise that the odds on your holing out routinely even from 6 ft are astronomical but that this is not a disaster if (2) you consistently lag these into your kill zone and these you should now be converting most of the time. repeat this on different holes and at different distances for as long as you like then go back to the first exercise.
