As anyone got any advise for me to over come the yips with putting ?I am sure other people have suffered ..help pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee

You could try the 'claw' grip which stops the right hand flicking

And if that doesn't help, you could try the V-Easy which will help stop both hands flicking.

Good friend of mine (plays off 3) had them really bad. His dad had an old two sided putter and he had a go at using it left handed .......he now plays right handed but putts left handed with an Odyssey 2 ball and is lethal.

I think I may have read something about the yips on here. Might be worth a trawl through the archives?

Delc is well versed in the subject, having had first hand experience of them, he'd be the man to speak to I'd say.

Close your eyes. I do that on most shots and seem to get away with it. (In my mind.)

Seriously though, take a few practice putts on the putting green with your eyes closed. You'll stop twitching and just go with it. Helped me once.

Try putting one handed and see which hand is causing the problem. If it's the right hand the Claw Grip should solve it. Also try oversized grips or split handed putting. If they are really bad, try putting left handed (assuming you are right handed).

Are you sure you have the yips? If you have, you have my sympathy.

What are your precise symptoms?

I've known - and seen - 3 or 4 players who have had them and have worked around them with changes of technique - including Claw Grip, Left-handed, longer putters and 1-handed (left-handed).

A change of how you hold the club should make a big difference. It did for me anyway. I had to rotate my right hand so that it was palm down, and make sure only my fingers were on the club. If the claw had existed back then, I would have changed to it!

Read "putting out of your mind" by Bob rotella. He's says that yips don't exist, anywhere but in the mind, and you can train yourself to get rid of them!
Having had the yips myself, I would say that is rubbish! Your mind/brain tries to make a nice smooth putting stroke, but your body does something else. The yips can affect other sports that require some degree of precision, and also musicians, especially pianists and guitar players. It is only well learned and almost automatic skills that are affected by them, which is why beginners and less experienced players never have them. They may be caused by some sort of neurological breakdown. The best advice is to learn a new method of putting, such as Claw Grip.

Delc - have you read the book? He seems to have a lot of pros who value his ideas, and his results are pretty impressive...........

That being the case, why do so many senior pro golfers have unconventional putting styles? If it was that easy to cure the yips they would still be putting conventionally!

This is wrong and like saying the eyes control blinking. You do present a good argument though, but long-winded posts of dribble purporting to be factual doesn't make it any more credible. Thanks for playing though, great contestant.

Nothing to do solely with seniors. Why do you have to play the "senior" card in every thread. Have you not seen Garcia, Mickleson etc all play with some bizarre grips over the years

The only thing you need to get the yips is a lot of exposure to the pressures of putting. Tour pros do much more real and practice putting than most amateur golfers and are therefore more prone to getting the yips at an earlier age. Further examples include Bernhardt Langer, Sam Torrance, and Adam Scott. Historically, Harry Vardon, Sam Snead, Gene Sarazen and Ben Hogan all got them by early middle age, often when they were still superb ball strikers.
