As it says in the title. Had a mare on the greens today. 50 FIVE ZERO putts!!!

still got round in 94 which isn't horrendous for me. I think some of it may have to do with me hitting mor gir, but generally further away as I used to have to chip on from the green side.

Considering a a putting lesson, but always thought putting was more feel than technique. Anybody have a lesson, did it work?

Yes, and Yes.

I am notoriously lacking in talent with the small wand. Having the right grip, posture, action (improved, not perfect) and path helped me loads.

OK, so yesterday I managed a 4 putt, but that course was 10 on the stimpmeter. Sh** happens.

I had 6 one-putts though.

- - -

I always think the safest way to avoid a 4-putt is to deliberately 3 putt.... ???

I've never had a lesson but, equally, you may have a flaw in your technique that a pro would see. For me it was several hours a week spent on the putting green. Nowadays it just needs an hour or so every few months.

Look on you tube for some drills and then try them on the putting green - might save yourself a bit of cash

I think this is what I need to do. Playing time is limited so when i do practice it's generally on the range. Have defo neglected putting. I'm just too inconsistent. My rounds are generally limited to my putts. Have preety got fir and gir. Putt well school well.

Think Hawkeye may be along to comment. He had a poor day on the greens. Bit like Westwood - great tee to green but was shocking on the greens. Thought he was going to erupt at one point with frustration. Mind you the holes were in some very weird and whacky positions and the greens are speeding up so it wasn't easy.

To the OP, the answer is simple. Get a lesson. There is no way you should ever be taking that many. What's the issue. Is it distance control or reading the putts. Get the basics right and a good stroke and practice hard on the short ones (3-6 feet) and your scores will tumble

its distance control mainly. From range can be a bit inconsistent. But from 10-15 ft I usually read the line well but either tap it or overrun. I invariably leave myself too many 6-10 footers for my 2nd putt.

Ya think!

Putting is all in the mind. Everyone can be good at putting. It isn't a dark art, or some sort of wizardry. Dr Bob's books have helped. O end...but your mind knows what it has to do...so just let the stroke happen. Don't overthink it, and get out of your own way

I had a putting lesson last Wednesday night.

Played yesterday with the changes and, honestly, it was night and day to how it was before.

All it took for me was 2 small changes.

1. Ball position back to centre. Was about 2 balls forward.

2. Step back about 6"-8" from the ball to get my eyes in a better position for my stroke.

Some times it's not a stroke fault, something more simple like how you address the ball.

I've had similar issues over the winter. My putting had gone to pot, distance control was none existent. Also missed a lot to the right. Convinced myself I needed a new putter more suited to my slight arc stroke the iping app recommended. Went to a local club who had an odyssey demo on. Spent 2 hours on the green trying different putters and finally got down to the metal x #1 and versa #1. Went to the range in the week and got my times wrong and mised last balls so spent an hour on the putting green. Everything was within 6" or holed! This was with my old putter! Went again in the week and the same. Think all it took was some practice and noting when setting up I was aiming 4" further right than I thought!

A new shiny is not always the answer!

If you are going to get a lesson try see a pro with a SAM lab
Really worth it as things can happen with your stroke a pro wouldn't be able to see but this laser technology is the best

it is, best 3 mins you'll spend, then go out and have fun again

Go get a putter fitting, I did and the difference was unreal. Definitely saved me 4-5 shots a round.

I had lessons, I bought a V-Easy, I practiced, everything was good on the practice green. But when I got on the course and had to make one off putts rather than the repetitiveness of the practice green my distance control went to crap.

It might be worth looking at fitting, if you feel your technique is good.

I had a lesson with a pro on the basis that he had the sam lab.

After he'd seen me putt, he was able to make more than enough adjustments manually! I suspect that if you're managing 50 per round there's something pretty fundamental that needs correcting that requires neither technology or new kit.

For better length control, try downloading a metronome app and practice with it. Someone has done some analysis on typical tour player putting temp (about 76 bpm if I recall) which I found helpful.

A lot of poor putters have problems with distance control caused by poor/inconsistent tempo.

Another plus point is that thinking about tempo pushes a lot of other rubbish out of your mind as it's not a 'technical' thought about aiming, line, grip etc etc

Good luck. Putting better improves anyone's game faster than just about anything else

'Tis true I had a shocker, but I only had 32 putts, 50 and I'd be suicidal.

To the OP, you either need a lesson or you need to stop thinking too much about it - or both. Whatever it is, after 50 putts a lesson is never going to make you worse ;)

Isnt 32 pretty good? Actually what is considered to be good? I've just started to count my putts to see how I fare as I think I'm an ok putter. At another course yesterday I had 29 putts, but 34 at my place today (after 27 last Sunday when I started counting). Looking to calculate an average after a few rounds and see how that stacks up over the months, but unsure what's good or not. I'd have said 32 or lower would be pretty good tho?

The number of putts in itself isn't enough to tell the story. I missed a lot of greens on the fringe or close to, chipped close and missed putts. A good putting round for me yesterday would have been 27 or 28. Other days 32 would be good. It all depends on how the round goes.

Get yourself a copy of David Pelz putting bible, cracking book loads of really good drills and advice.

It is quite a long read and a little slow going in places but worth the time.

I have had a putting lesson in the past and while it was helpful there is so much info in the book I would have to recommend it.
