I decided to play in the comp yesterday even though the weather was rubbish. After the 1st hole the rain stopped and it stayed dry all afternoon.

Started with a blob after a couple of dodgy chip shots then scored 15pts going out with 2 4putts and a couple of 3putts.

Back 9 was pretty similar with another 2 4putts and some 3putts for good measure. came back with 16pts so a total of 31pts but should've been better. Had a look at the results to see only 37 won it though conditions were tough.

Just been down the practice green for 90mins just practicing 3ft 6ft 9ft putts to try and get some sort of rhythm going.

Fingers crossed it'll help.

Homer, i have considered having a putting lesson but the Pro i use at the range doesn't have a practice green to teach on.

I dont really wanna use the club Pro, i'd prefer to stick with the same Pro who has taught me for the last 18 months or so.

My problem has been more about confidence and commitment to the putt rather than the stroke itself. I do sometimes let my wrists break and i have been toying with the idea of a 2 thumb grip but i'm worried that i wont like it.

I wouldn't worry too much about swapping teachers for a putting lesson. Call it a putting MOT but it does sound like there are issues and you've already highlighted breaking wrists. Are these down to the stroke or the way you set up. All I'm saying is that a quick one off lesson will save you money on new grips, potentially new putters down the line and give you piece of mind so you can stand on the greens with confidence especially in competitions

If your worried about missing it means you are not considering making it! I try to make everything and not worry about the one coming back if I dont make it! maybe its wrong for some, but for me it helped me a lot.

Homer. Congrats. 1.38 million posts and this is in the top 10 for me. Well said. :)

Law of averages says I was due eventually

If you read Rotellas 'putting out of your mind', technique is about 10 percent of putting. The key to putting is get it in the hole. Never mind how. Stuff lessons, just whack it in any old how.

Thanks for the advice gents, i need to be a lot more positive but not aggressive if you know what i mean.

I know its me and not the putter so there wont be no expensive mistakes buying putters.

I'll download that Bob Rotella book and have a listen.

Are you happy flicking your wrists?

No Bob i'm not pal but i think its more habit than anything else, thats why i'm thinking about a 2thumb grip.

If you're 4 putting 4 times and 3 putting 4 times, you need help. Thats 12 shots thrown away just on putting.
Obviously your technique isn't ideal so what to do?
Buy a new putter?
Buy a thicker grip?
Hit and hope?
No.
If as you say your chipping is also suspect I can only suggest 2 things.
Have a lesson or get yourself a training aid which stops you flicking your wrists. :)

What? What did I say?
:o :p

If you are 4 putting that often, most of the problems are in your head, if it was just technique you would find a way to get it in the hole sooner.

play a round without your putter use the blade of a wedge on the greens just concentrate on rolling the ball towards the hole keep the grip pressure really light.

Someone suggested I did this, perhaps you Freddie? I forgot to take the putter out, but did use the blade on the wedge for a few holes and putted so much better!

Went back to the flat stick and the lag putting improved and therehave been no four putts in the last 27 holes.

Hopefully I'll add another 18 to that total this afternoon.

Oh, and I have made a ral effort to be relaxed over the putt and once I have my line focus on a point three foot in front of the ball and make sure I hit that.
