The last few weeks I've been really struggling with my long putts. It's always something I struggle with as the greens get slower but the last few rounds I've 3 putted 4 or 5 times in each. I don't feel I'm a bad putter, I don't miss many short ones and hole my fair share of 8 to 10 footers. I don't have any doubt in my mind when I putt I just really struggle to get the distance right from long range. I often leave the ball about 10 feet short.

I know I need to hit the ball harder but when I try to I feel like I'm forcing it and end up miles past. Out of desperation the other day I had a search on the net and stumbled across a Dave Peltz article that suggested making long putts with you chipping stance. With nothing to lose I decided. To give it a go in the comp on Saturday and what a difference. I only had 1x 3 putt and that was due to an unfortunate bobble. All my long putts were within about 3 feet and most went past the hole which for me is unheard of.

I'm fairly sure my playing partners thought I was a bit odd but with results like that, who cares, I'm sticking with it!

Bob, it's not something I'd normally go for but it works a treat for me. I don't do it for all putts you understand. Just the long ones, say 20 feet plus. Anything under that I use my normal stroke. I just seemed to have more distance control from long distance. Might have been a fluke you never know but it's worth another shot if it works like that.

Abso flippin lutely but,
if it starts to go wrong again, try this.

I suspect if your long putts keep coming up short, it's because
1. your backswing is too short or
2. you're slowing down into the ball.

1. would be my guess

A smooth putting stroke with a short backswing will never be any good on the long putts, so what do you do?
You keep the normal backswing but HIT the putt. Off it goes 10 feet past.
On the longer putts, keep the stroke smooth but just swing back a little further.
That way, the stroke will be longer and the ball will go further.
Just don't "hit it"

Hawkeye, Out of interest how do you stand when you chip ??

Yes that was my thought, other than keeping more of my weight on my left foot when chipping I don't think there's much difference between that stance and when I putt.

I've seen the footage where Pelz teaches this method for long putts. It's just a case of standing a little open and he also says a little wrist hinge is good too.

I do use that method for really long putts as I don't really feel i have too much control if my putter backswing has to get too long.

Yeah on REALLY long putts I tend to visualise myself playing a chip and run, imagining the path of the ball across the green from a low chip shot, I find that tends to "inform" my muscles as to how hard to hit the putt. Not sure I actually change my stance but a very long putt should have some wrist hinge in it I think.

Long putts are one of the few parts of the game that's not too bad. I just take the putter back further, and extend through further, rather than keep the same length backswing and try and hit harded. I do putt from off the green a lot rather than chip if i can( worst putt better than worst chip syndrome), which does help judging distance. Also important to keep head still, as easy to look up and mishit the putt.

Thanks Bob

I know it sounds simple but I consider myself as a reasonably good putter, but over the last 6 weeks I am coming up short more and more often.
My playing partner is on to me all time, and mentioned that my backswing is to short, you have re-affirmed that.

Cheers

I would like to say my putting has improved since i starting using a V-Easy, but it hasn't, so i won't !

Before you ask my name, only joking :D :D :D
