That all comes with experience I dare say. Greens will vary in pace from day to day depending on weather, shade, frequency of cutting, grain, etc etc. As for the mechanics of the stroke then it's important to accelerate the putter thru the ball and towards the hole/intended target line.

My putting length control has improved recently (allbeit from the truly shocking). I found that by stabilising the right wrist I avoided too much 'release' which was sometimes sending the ball miles past. No wrist release means it's easier to control the length with the rocking action of the shoulders.

Of course, when you've no touch, every green has serves up a nasty little 20 footer.

I always just keep the same pace but increase the length

And I try to have a few putts on the practice green before the round in an attempt to guage the greens

I always try and have atleast 5 minutes on the putting green pre round. I start by knocking in a few 3/4 footers then work my way out, always hitting at least half a dozen 25/30 footers. I dont try to hole the putts, or worry about the line, just focus on getting the ball to a good distance from the hole. Then finish rattling in a few short ones for confience.

Don't think about it. Your brain can work it out for itself if you let it.

Exactly what I was going to post.

I always bang on about Bob Rotella, but he has a nice chapter on this concept. He reckons after the first hole(s) you will have the speed of the greens. Your brain should have the info required to calculate how much is needed. All you have to do is try to hole the putt - which sounds crazy but when you do try this it really is one of those moments when you think "what have I been doing?"
