Had a solo round today just trying a few things. Firstly, I shot 78 (+7) so quite satisfying. Hit 8 fairways and 10 greens so that was even better. The trouble is, getting my driving sorted(ish) means I'm starting to hit many more fairways than normal. This is leading to more greens hit. And this is putting my putting under pressure. Not quite Kaymeresque in my approaches I generally had 10-20 footers on the 10 greens I hit. Now I don't know what the average is to hole from that distance but I can tell you I didn't even come close. Nearest was a tap-in of 6-8 inches.
Normally I'm not a bad putter. Today I didn't have a 3 putt but only had 2 x 1 putt greens.
16 2 putt greens isn't a disaster and the score overall was decent. But if I could have holed some of those birdie chances.........

The greens are not conducive to good putting at the moment and I'm not getting too wound up about it. Once they settle down I expect things to get better.
Until then the Sabertooth had better watch out...

imurg, it might not help but for the last 5 months my putting has been solid why my long game has been well below average. last sunday i played and my long game was on fire, but my putting was toilet, and likewise this week my long game was above average (with the odd disaster) but again my old putting didnt really come in until 14th.

Maybe it was just an off day?>

Is it a problem with the stroke or are you just not reading them too well. If its the latter then I wouldn't worry too much as they aren't great to putt on and it can be hard to find the lines when they are wet and bobbly. I know I always struggle and if a few bounce off line I tend to lose a bit of confidence

The more GIR you hit, the worse your putting looks. Look at McIlroy, tee to green he is probably the best in the world at the moment, but he gives himself that many chances, that people think he is a bad putter.

With regards to how many 10-20 footers you would expect to hole. Probably 1 or 2 out of 10

Struggling to find the pace of the greens at the moment. PLus, as I said, they're not too good at the mo so not getting too down - yet.
Got 2 more games this week (work's quiet) so we'll see.

Just maybe I need a new putter..... :p :p :p

It is just winter golf. I had about 25 putts on Saturday, and then about 42 on Sunday. No good worrying about it. Golf at this time of year is just a walk in the park.

Wot he said :)

Nothing wrong with 34/36 putts when you hit 18 greens in regulation.

i think for myself, as the long game has improved i have maybe been neglecting the pre-putt routine, after all ive done the hard work right. The worst thing is your spend hours on the putting green practice practice practice, but this time of year every green on the course is different through natural draining.

A prime example is out 15th, every other course can be dry, yet this somehow holds water even though its on a slight slope and is raised. i wouldnt take putting too serious this time of year until teh courses have dried from all the underlying water form the snow and recent heavy downpoors

Far too early in the year to be worrying about putting. Just enjoy hitting the ball better , the short game can be worked on in March before the season begins in earnest

My putting is dire at the moment, but once the greens speed up i hope it will come back to me.

As previously said wouldn't worry about putting just yet.

All the posts above are right, you just cannot sink all of your putts from 10+ feet, yeh 2-3 maybe.

The most important thing is to get your approaches closer, that means you need to control your distance, distance and distance!

and your aim

But distance is important, once you know your yards you can knock it close with your wedges,

Surely you'd put more pressure on your putting by missing the green and then having to get up and down in two for the par???

I feel that if I miss the green then I've got to hit a good chip - inside, say, four feet otherwise the pressure on the one putt for par is massive.

Hit the green in regulation and I'm far more confident of making the par - and I'm a rubbish putter......
