Thread topic has probably been done to death.

Who has had a putting lesson? What did you take from it? Can you honestly say it was worth it? Is it important to go to someone with a SAM lab?

I had one, it was the best use of my golf practice time EVER. i have seriously improved my putting by getting my fundamentals and a practice regime sorted from a couple of hours with my teacher. Ok i got lucky and my putting teacher has been in the top 100 golfers of the world, but hey! putting is putting!

My opinion on putting lessons, is DO IT! DO IT NOW!!!

IMO Putting is an individualistic as handwriting.

On saying that there are a few of fundamentals;

eyes over the intended line
Head and body still
accelerate the putt at impact and see the putter hit the ball

do this and then its down to reading line/pace etc

Often thought about it but never had one. Decided to buy myself a new putter instead as it's obviously the fault of the club rather than me.

I've just come back from a golf weekend and heard the best excuse for driving poorly that I've ever come across. One of the guys was convinced that the pro that sold him his driver had "put a left handed shaft in it instead of a right handed one". I'm now using that excuse for my previously poor putting.

Just out of curiosity what is a SAM lab?

I have had one.. quelle surprise. No need to go for the full SAM lab process to improve. A good PGA pro will sort you out and then its down to hard work and practice.

I had one and I agree with this.

I even chose the guy because he had a SAM lab, but we never got beyond this trained eye and an ipad to show me that what I thought I was doing was really not the reality.

It's good to have another pair of eyes check the fundamentals. As CMAC says, there aren't many but it can be hard to spot when you're not doing them correctly.

All a pro can do is ready you how to make a consistent stroke. The reading of the line and pace can only be improved by practice

Had a putting lesson, it was good, worthwhile.

Had a SAM session, not worthwhile for players at our level. The intricate stats and measurements don't help at all.

I take it your frog has gone [ hopped ] off, but seriously one of mates got a putter fitting a couple of months ago and its made a huge difference. I might get the details for you, once i get over my trolley trauma .

Consider it Trackman (well, GC2/HMT) for putting.

It's a set of cameras that detect all the details necessary to show what you are doing - head path, strike scatter, tempo etc.

Not a solution itself, but a teacher can analyse the results and identify areas to improve - then demonstrate/show the improvements. Or it can be used as a fitting tool - again showing before/after resilts.

I have had a couple of putting lessons with different pro's, one on the putting green and an indoor mat with a device similar to a SAM. the indoor session was ok, it told me that my swing paths etc were pretty ok and my other stats were consistant. It didn't do anything for my holing of putts

I had a pro lesson with a different pro before the SAM type analysis and that helped enormously. He checked my alignment and that I was sending the ball at the hole. My biggest issues was an involuntary turn of the right hand before impact, he got my right hand much more round the back of the putter grip, so the flat of my hand was holding the back of the grip and not the side and, hey presto, no turn of the hand and straighter putts. Since then I've tweaked a couple of more things in chatting with mates who are good putters about their techniques, tried them, and took out what's worked and feel now a wholly better putter of the ball

My Pro fitted me for free using SAM when I bought my putter last year. As a beginner I was taught the basics in a group lesson and had a few tweaks when having a playing lesson with him which seem to be working.

Although that's true, being able to roll the ball where you are aiming is the most important bit and the starting point.

If nothing else it'll make anything within 3 feet a gimme as you can always take the break out of it and give it a whack if you know you can hit it on the line you intend.

I had one a few weeks ago, he helped me to get a more square stance, head position and more mechanical stroke.
I was standing leaning back, with the putter face slightly open and pushing through the ball.
He suggested it was down to my right-eye dominance, and having putt on green that were like porridge before I moved to Kedleston.
It's starting to feel less awkward now, and I certainly seem to be improving steadily.

Never heard that before? I thought it was all about a smooth, consistent stroke!

I used the SAM at rob rocks place and has made a huge difference. It picked up soooo much stuff that a normal pro missed with the naked eye. Well worth it

I had a putting lesson and it was good value. My pro is a very good putter and most of our time was spent on him showing me practice routines that he uses and that he wanted me to take up. The first was an exercise/game in distance control, and the next was in accuracy where he suggested to use a hole cup reducer and target 10 in a row from club length away. We also looked at a lining up routine.

No mate- the Frog is an awesome putter and here to stay. It's the tumshie holding it that's the problem.

Finally found my swing (you've yet to see it, I'm sure) after my back injury and scored 85... I wasn't playing amazing but hit a good few greens in regulation. +15 after injury is fine, you'd say but I had no less than 5 three-putts. Chuck in a stupid iron shot that I put OOB and that's 7 shots which should not have been on my scorecard. That's single figures golf at a canter.

it is, but without decelerating, if you can maintain a 'speed' then great but most of us have no chance doing that, so accelerating at impact (even slightly) will ensure you don't decelerate which is a killer for putting.

I had one, in fact, my last lesson prior to the season start of this season.

Apparently all I needed to do was adjust my alignment (Fractionally right) and drop my ball position back a touch.
