Saw the above stat online today...

From 3ft and under Luke Donald has holed 1,599 putts from a possible 1,600 while playing on the PGA tour over the last 5 years!

I'm sure the stat is worded as PGA tour to exclude some other tournaments etc but its still impressive

Kinda makes me think about those 3-putts that plague my rounds :p

He is a ridiculously good putter but I wouldn't imagine he is alone, Greg Chalmers is 365 from 365 this season. Ian Poulter is last on the putting from 3ft stats and he's only missed 9 of his 202 attempts. The bottom line is, these guys rarely miss from 3ft

I use to be confident from that range and made a few. Recently I seem tentative and trying to dribble them in and missing. Off to work on a more positive stroke tonight. At my level you only need a few of these per round to smarten an average card up into something half decent

I too saw that stat and found it mighty impressive.

Having said that, he didn't seem as strong/confident on the greens over last season. Looked much better in the last tournament and showed in his final placing.

Just out of interest, do you bother using aimpoint for 3 footers and below?

I've been flicking through Harvey Penick's little red book and one suggestion is for a period of 2 weeks (assuming you practice) he says if you devote 90% of your practice to chipping and putting and only 10% to full swings it's possible you can take 5 shots off your handicap.
I have no idea how likely this is but it sounds like it might be worth a try instead of smashing balls at the range.

I would think this is entirely possible, no matter how good your average club golfer gets at the long game, they are still going to miss 5 or 6 greens per round, get up and down 80% of the time and you save a lot of shots. I would think 2 weeks would require you to be practicing every day but the theory is still valid IMHO

Yeah I was thinking that myself about it being every day. Not possible for someone like me but no reason why I can't give it a go 3 times a week - will just take a month instead :D

we will often leave ourselves three foot dribblers down hill.

the pros not only know what side of the green to miss. chances are, when they lag/ chip they will leave themselves the easiest next shot!

even when we try to leave ourselves an uphill putt, its not always possible due to being crap!

I don't think I have ever tried to leave myself another putt, I always try to hole the one I'm playing :D

Try this drill that Darren Clarke does and I've done it to. Find a straight putt on your green, if you use alignment rods place the tips either side of the hole and this should give a rail track from hole to 3-4ft away, and putt between the rods. This will help in a couple of ways, the rods will help line your putter face square, also it aids your path depending on your stroke. Once you get used to this drill take one rod away and keep doing it until you take both away.

You can extend the 3-4ft putt drill by taking the ball back to 5-6 ft away and try and putt from there through the rods to the hole. This drill has an effect that makes you positive.

I can 3 putt from 3 feet!

I DID 3 putt from 3 feet last week. In total, it was a four putt.

Putted the entire length of an uphill green. (past the flag 3 foot)
Missed the one 3 foot down the slope.
Putted *almost* the entire length of an uphill green AGAIN :) . (2 foot short)
Holed out, glad to make only a double bogey.

so true.........I played a scratch h/capper in the club champs, I outdrove him everytime, our second shots were comparible but his short game was outstanding, chips were stone dead, bunker play was within 3 feet, and putts were gimmes under 5 feet.

I nearly drove one of the par 4's then took 4 more to get it in the cup!

So yes, I believe its very possible and actually probable

Wow that's an amazing stat !!

If he only he could sort out his driving
