I use a n,s,e,w setup around the hole and putt from 3,4,5,6,7 and 10 feet. With 5 balls from each compass point what sort of success rate should I aim for before moving on to the next distance. I use 100% for 3 footers but what is reasonable for the others as a starting point? What would you aim for? :D :D

I have an 8' x 4' astroturf putting mat in my back garden and since October when I installed it, I average 71% from seven feet. That's a pretty good starting point to work from.

I got some good drills from the local pro.

No 1, putter face alignment and weight of putt. take a 8 & 9 Iron, make a channel slightly wider than your putter face, about 8 feet from a hole. Practice putting through the channel, with the ball placed just inside the end of the grips. Letting the putter pass the shaft decals will be sufficient to make a 6-8 foot putt.

No 2, take 5 balls, pick a spot far end of the practice green, 3 practice swings, hit ball 1, repeat for 5 balls, dont look up and practice until you get a real nice grouping.

No 3, 5 foot putts like you said place balls around the cup, dont leave until you drop all five.

a good practice session takes an hour, can be tough on the back, but will worth it.
Good putting practice really does help your scorecard.
Hope the above helps.

Paul - that mat got any break on it? Trying to console myself cos that seems very good indeed!

Not really - it's just all about repetition. I can go outside under our conservatory and practice for 15 minutes each evening by hitting 100 putts. By keeping track of how I'm doing, I get the feeling of improvement that I'm looking for.

The astroturf runs about 9 on the stimp so a bit quicker than most of the greens so far this year but it's just all about repetition. It's just all about repetition. It's just all .....

How do you adjust your speed when you play on greens that are slower than your putting mat??

A good drill is to hole 9 consecutive putts, first three from 3 feet, next three from 6 feet, last three from 9 feet. If you miss you start at the beginning again. Dont go home (or finish) until you have holed all nine putts. Really does get you feeling a bit under pressure when you've been at it for half an hour and have to hole the ninth putt!

100% - when you're practicing you want to try to create pressure, if you don't move to the next distance until you get 100% you generate some pressure to putt under - if you're no good at putting, you might be there a while though :D

My pro, who went to college in the US, said their golf coach wouldn't let them leave the putting green until they had holed 50 consecutive 4 footers. Apparently some people were there all night!
