How do I decide what new putter to go for? There are so many different styles, is it a case of getting to a big retailer and trying as many as possible?
I scored 89 yesterday, 39 of those were putts. I know its more the idiot operating the putter, but I use a cheapie I picked up early in my golfing "career", and feel a better stick is well overdue.
Any advice please?

Putters are an individual item of equipment-some players like blade types putters others mallet heads others the 2 ball type.

Suggest you go to your local retailer or golf pro try a few clubs and see what feels good in your hands.I recently bought the Odyssey Dual Force 2 blade type putter best investment in years-i am putting a lot better with the new wand.

Everybody is different but the putter is probably the most important club you have,so try as many as you can and spend as much as you can afford.I have just changed to a mallet putter and have stopped leaving it as short as i was.

Try before you buy - on grass not on some instore carpet. My suggestion would be let your pro look at your putting action and recommend a style of putter to suit (blade vs mallet). It will save you trying loads of putters that aren't really suitable. Make sure you get him to check whether you are a 34, 35 or 36 inch fit.

If your pro doesn't have many in stock I'd recommend AG but make sure you find one with a proper green.

more importantly, if you don't already know what you need, your pro will sort out whether your putting style calls for a face or heel balanced putter. that will eliminate at least half of the putters on display.

and to re-iterate Homers point - test it on grass.

Dont rush into it, you will know when you have found the right one but you should try everything firts!
