Could anybody let me know how much roughly customs will charge for buying a golf club from abroad (US or Australia)?
I'm potentially buying a putter for a combined total (including postage) of £150, but don't have a clue what else I might get charged for as import and customs charges are mentioned and state that I'll be responsible for them.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

be careful cause i got stung once in the early Ebay days. Thought I had found a good little earner when I found 10 of the original NIKE drivers (this was while they had only been on the market a couple of years) for an excellent price. I got them for a good price and looked at making a few hundred quid off them on Ebay. by the time customs had stung me I barely broke even and that only happened because a couple of them had exotic shafts in them.

And don't forget Parcel Farce's fee - £12.50?

It used to be a bit hit and miss about whether Customs would bother to check/charge, but I believe EVERY parcel is assessed these days!

From the USA it will cost you around 75 quid on top of purchase price1. You lose out on the exchange rate, so thats a fiver gone2. You do not get the club direct you get a card saying it has arrived and P.S. it is 12 or 18 quid to tel you this, i see from above this might be a standard 12.50 now3. You pay vat on the club4. Shipping will be quite a lot on a single club to 40 quid would be good, if you get it at this rate from the USA you will be using USPS and they SUCK more than you can possibly believe (I have waited months in the past) and they are consistently in excess of 2 weeks, if you use UPS OR DHL double the shipping cost.150 quidcost you 225 quid and take a while to turn upAlso , if this is NEW you almost certainly have no warranty, not that this matters giving the return shipping costs.

I had one delivered worth 75quid from Ebay a couple of weeks ago - it was don use the Ebay Global Shipping program - it cost 25quid delivery but there were no additional customs or delivery charges from there.

Work on an additional 20% + £10 ie £190

You may not get charged the handling fee, or it may be a touch more - Depends on who's shipping and who's handling in the UK.

There may be an element of duty over and above vat but it's probably minimal (2-3%) - haven't looked it up.

I'm also looking at buying from the states. On the eBay page there is no mention of import fees. Can/will these be added later?

Thanks everyone for your help.
Does it matter what country (US or Australia) or is rest of the world just the same?
Sounds like it'll cost me about £20 more I'll go for.

If you are importing from outside the EU you pay Vat
If you are importing within the EU you do not pay Vat as it is included in the retail price they are charging you

Does not matter where it is coming from as our rate of VAT is not going to change based on where they are.

OF COURSE EBAY pages do not mention IMPORT fees, they almost certainly do not know what they are, many companies send retail product directly to the UK obvious to the fact that to receive the goods the UK consumer has to pay handling charges plus Vat

Put it this way, if you EBAY stuff and someone in Japan wanted you to ship, would you tell them if their taxes were covered?

You can get services that cost a lot to include Vat UPS offer this for example.

Given the crumby exchange rates, i cannot see where you might get value in buying from the USA at this time, when you consider slow shipping time, no returns option etc

Is it really going to be worth it? Do not forget too, you do not get the headline exchange rate, you lose out there too
