Provisional Question

Had this come up today and just wondered what the ruling is:

I hit my tee shot 270ish yards and it was over towards OB on the right, wasn't sure if it had gone OB so took a provisional.

Topped my provisional towards the ladies tees

Question is:

My first shot is over 200 yards away, can I hit a second shot on the provisional upto the location of my first shot or do i need to walk the 200 yards see if i can find it, if not go back to provisional?

I found it safe, but just wondered.

You can play the provisional until you are up to where you believe the original ball to be. So you were right!

thats good then, I left my clubs at the provisional and ran to where i thought it was, then ran back when i found it.

my partner and i were both unsure!

Yes you can play the provisional ball upto where the first ball is approximately. So as Imurg says.

Hit the pro v as many times as you like but do not hit it from beyond the point where you think your first has gone or the pro v becomes the ball in play
