Do you have to look for your first ball first or can you play your second shot with provisional ball then start looking?

You keep playing your provisional until you reach the point you think your original ball is.

You can play another shot with the provisional. Rule 27-2b. Not being critical, but you should get yourself a rule book, they're free & the answer can be found in seconds by looking up "provisional ball" in the index.
