Ok deep sigh, going to have a moan (sorry) My other half played in a two round comp and was leading the 1st round by 6 shots. She played the 2nd round on Saturday did not do as good but won the comp with the best combined score by 5 shots.
Now we are pretty happy as this will be her 1[SUP]st[/SUP] major ever, name on the board etc. however we are still waiting for the results to be confirmed.
Anyway today just found out that my missus can’t win it as her handicap level is exempt from this particular comp and will go to the person who is illegible instead! As my wife is at the higher end of the handicap she is not allowed the prize (she is classed as bronze level and only Silver and above can win it) as far she can recall was not informed of this before the comp started and is really gutted.
She does not want to cause any fuss and has told me to keep “my trap” shut the next time we are in the club but feel really bad for her and the fact after playing so well (had a bit knocked off her handicap) will have nothing to show for it!
Mt other gripe is that someone will win the trophy but did not actually play as well as the winner, where is the justice in that?
Sorry for the moan but needed to get this off my chest, I am normally quite a placid person and don’t rant and rave on forums so apologies in advance.
Anyway has this sort of thing happened to anyone else in the past and if so what did you do.

Thanks for reading Matt L

Can you not ask for confirmation of where it was written that only silver & above could win? If not, you've surely got a case to ask why that decision was made and not all entrants told? You've not got to get angry or rude, just ask why. At least you'll know for next time!

That's a real shame, does nothing to encourage newer players but almost certainly due to poor communication (as is so often the case). There can be an assumption that all players read every bit of small print that is written on notices, in handbooks or whatever (and it will be documented somewhere you can bet) when all that's needed is it to be made clear from the outset what the rules are. We have a similar rule for higher handicap juniors but they get a prize of equivalent value should they "win" which is a nice gesture.

At the end of the day though the rules are the rules and your partner simply isn't eligible to win. Just put it down to experience, keep playing well and her day will come. Also, it's not the fault of the person that ends up as winner either so let them enjoy their win. They only played well on the day and didn't make the rules so it's not really fair to be sour.

I would quietly ask for clarification and if its true the club should be able to show this to you.

Don't kick up a massive fuss as that never seems to end well :D

It's not uncommon that board comp's have handicap limits, I suppose it means that the winner will more likely be someone with a more settled handicap. Stops new members or those improving rapidly from winning everything.

Hopefully she should get something for her success, the divisional prize at least? I thought that was the norm.

I know how your feeling, my wife had the same a few years ago. I kicked up a fuss as the handicap limit wasn't documented for this particular comp (it was a relatively new one (millenium)) and it took the 3 weeks to sort out. She still didn't win it, but at least it's on the list of limited comps now.

Reminds me of the main reason I got disillusioned with Golf as a 16 year old. Turned up one Sunday morning with my mate (before online tee booking) to find there was a Texas Scramble on, 2 seniors had done the same, so on the advice of the pro we teamed up and headed out. After an enjoyable 18 holes we got back in and found out later in the afternoon we'd won. From what I can remember it was a decent amount of pro shop credit, particularly for a 16 year old.

Got an email a few days later saying that we were disqalified as a group could only contain 1 junior.

cheers for all the replies guys. not going to cause a storm as I don't want to upset the boss lol. Just wanted to vent my disappointment

My Donna going to check on Thursday when she plays he next comp, but going to check to see if she can win it 1st ;)

That we are not sure on, if it is gross she would of been screwed

Could have had a maximum handicap limit or something then but should have been clear on the entry form. She's right to check for future and ask that the rules be made clearer. Nice that you're miffed for her and want to wade in on her behalf BUT knowing a bit more about how ladies sections tick it's best she handle it her way or the coven of ex captains and committee members will be onto her

As a junior my mate & I played in Captain's Day, we hadn't done ever so well so thought nothing of the prize evening.
We then got a call from the club saying that we'd won the Captain's secret competition. When we turned up to the club the chairman came over and told us that we couldn't have the prize as we were juniors.
The captain then came over and corrected him, he said that if 2 juniors could score the best gross score on all the par 5's they deserved the prize, and beside someone balls'd up by letting us pay our entry fee and enter the comp', he overruled the chairman.

Paddy was one of those really good captains who made every member feel important, as opposed to the chairman who wasn't particularly nice unless you were parto f his clique.

Unfortunately golf clubs have too many of the later.

It does seem strange that it is not documented as a handicap limit, I have played in comps that have different winners for silver and bronze but I have known in advance.

the club should have a folder with all the competitions and formats / rules etc somewhere. most clubs have so many complicated ecelctic / cumulative / points based competitions that they need a list of all the rules - the comps secretary and the pro should have copies.

if it's in there that there is a handicap limit then i think that she should be heartened by a great round, but the rules are the rules and concede gracefully that she wasn't eligible.

focus on having a great season, getting the handicap down and winning it for real next year.

I understand your annoyance if the restriction to silver wasn't made clear but this tells me your gripe about the winner "not playing as well" as your OH was wide of the mark.
perhaps my comment was misleading about that. what I was trying to say is that the winner has won the trophy even though they were not the best golfer over the two days. I personally would see this as a shallow victory. It does not concern me who the prize goes too now, we have moved on from this unfortunate situation and will learn from this :)

Thank you all for your comments! The boss is ok and is pleased that she is getting better at the game. She said last night that she is taking the positives form playing well and getting a deserved handicap cut. She is also grateful for the feedback you have all given too
