Just watched a shot of Westwood playing an approach shot. As is usual, a big divot went about 20 paces forward. Westwood made a half-hearted attempt to stamp on the damage but he and his caddy walked past the divot within a pace of it. Don't caddies replace divots?

The divots gets removed by the birds anyway - they go around afterwards and fill the holes up with sand and grass seed

they do, generally..........they're only human

Many places around the world, Asia being one, ask you not to replace the divots but to fill them with some dirt\seed. Us mere mortals would be expected to do that ourselves, I suspect someone goes round after the pros to do it for them.

The Majority of courses you play in Asia have caddies, and as said above they won't replace the divots but rather they carry round a bag of seed with them that they put into the divot just created. Conditions are usually a lot more humid with a lot of rain so I guess its perfect grass growing conditions.

Can anyone explain to me (a beginner) why they all seem to take a good divot with an iron shot? Did the pro's of old like Faldo etc do this?

Ball then turf...angle of attack on the mid to lower clubs. Pros can more than likely decide to clip the ball nicely of the turf or go for a WW1 type trench with a gap wedge.

Same for me, not often there's enough divot remaining in one piece anyway but we always have the seed mix to fill-in and refill points round the course
