Watching some of the golf over the weekend, numerous times I saw caddies pacing out yardages then double checking their books. Surely the time has come now where pros should be allowed to use lasers to speed up play?

It's being trialled in the Euro Pro tour currently

All it seemed to do the days I watched earlier this year is make it easier to highlight who is slow and who is fast. Some of them take a yardage pull a club and hit it (golf as it should be!) some took a yardage then went back into their never ending routine faffing about changing club before finally actually hitting the shot. Getting the right number only a small part of the battle for some it seems

I think the professional pace of play is spot on!

Today I watched till lunchtime, at which point Donaldson dunked it in the water on 9. I ate lunch and returned to see him putt out on the next green. I then took the dog out for an hour, and was still back in in time to see the last 4 holes... perfik!

I can see absolutely no reason why not TBH.

False economy to not let them use DMDs...
After all, the data they use to create the yardage books is all acquired via Laser and they all use Lasers during practice.
They have to do something
Watching a 5-6 hour round is second only to playing one in the "slash wrists" stakes......

I watched a little of the Tiger event last night, and saw Kuchars FC (can't remember who) play a shot into the 2nd I think, and then the cameras were turned onto Kuchar on other side of fairway and he bent down picked his ball up got his caddy to clean it, then replace it, get his yardage book out blah blah blah then hit his shot. Now if that was in real time, how come he wasn't ready to play like its rammed down our throats to speed up play!!!!! Or could it be a case of getting air time to get their sponsors promoted as much as possible! It is getting pathetic on seeing some players shenanigans they go thru in how long it takes to hit a golf ball.

If you let them use lasers then what will come next? They will be expected to read their own putting lines next and that will never do, then the floodgates will open and we could see them carrying a bag, raking bunkers, replacing divots, cleaning their own balls and clubs after a shot. Slippery slope if you ask me.

Whoaaaa hang on. I never said they had to use the lasers themselves, the caddies can still do that for them ;)

And what would be wrong with that? It is supposed to be an individual sport ;)

Some of the players wouldn't have the IQ to use the laser! I think it makes perfect sense but when has that ever bothered the R&A and USGA

R&A and USGA have authorised a Local Rule allowing DMDs to be used. It's up to the relevant Tour to put that LR into effect.

Pros get the yardage to flag almost instantly but they are not really interested in that. It's the yardage behind the flag, to the side, to the slop, to the 'aim point' that is the tricky bit - ie where the 'best miss' is.

If you allowed them lasers, they would take even longer as they would use that and THEN go through the current very slow process....in all honesty though they are just saving themselves a wait on the next tee!

???

The Euro Pro Tour has always permitted it afaik, as have the Jamega and TP Tours

No 'trial' involved.

Was told that this was the first year that the Euro Pro Tour allowed them on a trial basis - from someone playing on it ???

The pace of professional play is laughable. Ditto professional tennis.

Can't agree with that!

Though they do have a certain commonality. Channels quite like them because of the predictability of gaps, so Ad breaks are easy to manage and relatively harmless. Part of the reason Association Football hasn't taken off in US - another being the inability of Americans to handle a Draw!

The Yanks came up with a new rule for that, wider goals and if a draw then........ M-M-M-M-M-Multibaaaaalllll 20 balls blasted on the pitch, first to score wins.............now THAT would be exciting:cool:
