2 questions on the Pro V1 balls...

1,
Do the Pro V1 balls go that much further off the tee compared to other brands.
I've never tried them out to find out but hear they go a lot further, noticably off the tee.

2,
if I was interested in buying Pro V1 balls where can I buy a dozen that won't cost £30-£35?? Any deals anyone knows of?? Possibly pearl grade...???

I dont find that they are long off the tee, tp black, v1x are harder cases and go longer for me. The v1 are most notable around the green and on approach imo.

At the moment I play Srixon AD333's and although I like the feel of them I get the impression they don't fly as much as some other balls.

To put it simply... I played a 4 ball the other day and in the group is a 67 yr old guy with a very short backswing and almost like a short arm jab through the ball off the tee. Now off the tee I know I can hit it a decent distance but this guy was hitting it further than me. With the irons he was probably 4 clubs back from me so I can safely say he's not superman and there is a clear difference in something somewhere when playing off the tee.
He told me he hasn't been able to get any distance with the driver until he moved to Pro V1's and he said I'd be 30-40yards past him if I used them.
So that's how this all came about and was just wondering on the experience of other Pro V1 players and how much difference it made for them off the tee.

You should really try lots of different golf balls. Some go farther than others, it depends on your swing speed and angle of attack. One that goes miles for one player may be shorter off the tee for others.

So don't go on recommendations from other's, ask to try one and hit a few drives and see if you hit it any longer compared to your playing partner and if you do then start playing that ball if it suits the rest of your game. Then look at other balls until you find YOUR perfect ball. Remember when the manufacturer changes the ball to do the checks again as their new ball may not suit you.

I know Srixon at Maidenhead Golf Centre offer a ball fitting service to see which of their models suits a players game the most. I'm sure others like Titleist must do something more scientific than the reader survey.

The AD333's fly equally as far as the ProV1 in my opinion - in fact I would say slightly more from experience. The main difference is perhaps a loss of feel and spin when compared to the Titleist. Don't feel you are missing out distance-wise with the Srixon's - I changed from ProV1's to the AD333 primarily due to cost and the minimal reduction in spin which I feel I can work around.

The Srixon pages have really good ball guides, including what the equivalent competitor ball is to each of their's.

Different balls obviously do different things, a ProV1 is not just a distance ball, primarily it is a feel ball, so surprising to see an old codger with one. Usually when these boys are hitting it sneaky long, they're knocking a pinnacle or Top Flite, or something with 'xtreme' in the name.

Maybe though, it does just suit his swing. Bit if distance is your #1 priority, then you need to look for distance balls.

The reason the prov is the most widely used on the tour is its a good allrounder, when a lot of other balls do one thing or another,of course there are other balls that are cheaper and can be compared to provs but if there good enough for the pros there good enough for me.A lot of people go on about the provs being too expensive but you dont have to buy brand new ones.

I've never really ventured away from Srixons. I've had the odd ball you find and try it out but quickly loose it again...!!!

Interesting to hear the Pro V1 isn't all about distance. Without me doing any kind of research I was under the impression it gives great feel and goes a mile too.
I do get good distance with the driver when I can hit a fairway, but was curious to see if I can get further without letting go of feel on the ball.

Try Nike One Vapor. I hit these further than anything else.

I think the best ball for a player can range wildly. I'm still trying to finish off my Srixon green soft-feel.
"The ideal choice for lower swing speed"....my arse.
I lose 5-10% distance with these. Yet "proper" swing speed players find them good.

I tried a ProV X once. That didn't go very far at all!!! :D :D :D-

If money was no object, I'd play Vapor for distance and Z-Star just because they are awesome across the board.
I sometimes play ProV1s but not on long holes with trees or lakes!!!!

I think this is a throwback to when they were launched. Then, 'spin' balls were balata and didn't go far, or you had bricks that went a mile but never stopped on the green. Or you had inbetweeners like Titleist PTS which did neither very well.

The ProV changed that, and gave much longer distance, with almost the same spin characteristics as a balata. But they are NOT a distance ball, and won't go as far as a Pinnacle or the like.

If distance is your only aim, then you need a distance ball.

I was honest with the Titleist guy at CS, I said I could hit both sides of the fairway off the tee - at the same time. He gave me Pro-V1x and NXT tours.

Aren't you supposed to be able hit at umpteen miles/hour to be able to use Pro-V1x?

Oh, and I have two boxes of Pro-V1's that I might take to Ascot if I'm made a suitable inducement.

Just reading through the threads again...
Do you think a Pro V1 is a definate winner compared to a lot of other balls??
I can see some balls are better suited than others for everyones individual swing speeds etc...

I think the best option for me is to probably buy a sleeve of a few different balls I fancy trying out and see which one suits me best.

Many thanks everyone for the advice.

Tried the new TM Penta again today when I was swinging half decent and I'm still not convinced. Definitely shorter than the Srixon Z star and the Pro V. Also around the greens I didn't get as much spin on chips as I do with the other premium balls. I won't be rushing to get any Penta's

Interesting Homer, I read this elsewhere, not tried them myself.

Pros...

Superb stability in the wind
Soft and responsive off the putter and wedges delivering good spin and feel in all aspects of the short game.
Not harsh or clicky at all.
Magnificent feedback and feeling off long and mid irons.
Excellent levels of spin when playing long approach shots into the wind.

Neutral...

Doesn't seem to offer any significant increase or reduction in driving distance.
Reasonable durability.

Cons...
It doesnt have a Titleist logo on it so will not get the recognition it deserves.

This ball is seriously good....I've tried most of the premium balls over the last couple of years from TM, Titleist, Callaway, Nike, Bridgestone and Srixon and have been disappointed by most of them...especially in terms of feel around the greens....perhaps only the Titleists really cut the mustard in this area. The Penta TP easily outperforms them all in virtually all areas.
