Having played 4 rounds with a ProV1, I played a practice 9 holes the other day with it and it was stil in pretty good nick, however, I hit two balls with my Driver, this ProV1 and a Srixon Tri-Speed never used new ball both with exactly the same swing and both out of the meat however the Srixon went about 10yrds further!

Does a new ball that's been wacked 200 times lose its performance?

I wouldnt worry about it, unless you are Iron Byron you will never hit any two balls exactly the same. Id say they will lose a tiny percentage of performance once they get to a certain state but as hackers would we notice?

the only thing that concerns me about the pro v's is how chewed up they get.

i tend to use a brand new one for every medal round and put the chewed up used one in the bounce game part of the bag.

i think when they get chewed up a bit they use a bit of performance because they won't be in perfect condition but for me they still seem to perform well....

as above i think the srixon ball is a lot harder and would go further.

Having never played a Pro V ball, this would be my guess.

When they "chew up", as you say. Does this affect the shape/pattern of the dimples?

If so then it could be affecting the aerodynamics, but as Brendy said
as hackers would we notice?

I would guess that continually compressing the core will gradually cause internal shearing, which will lead to a drop in recovery, and hence performance.

I had a strata when they first came out, and after 5 rounds it was crackered. A new one was about 20 yards longer than the old one.

That said, technology has moved on, and may be I don't compress the ball like I could.

Tiger has said before that he would use a new ball for every shot if he could. But then he doesn't pay for them.

A new shiny ball will cut the air better. A pro v (or any ball) is only good for one good round if you’re lucky. It only needs to be slightly marked to have an aerodynamic effect.

However, if you could hit balls without damaging the outer surface it should still go as far after a few rounds.

I use a Pro V1 ball until it's knackered and this is usually 5+ rounds. I cannot notice any discernable difference in performance between rounds 2 and 5+ either. I can tell if it is brand new though.

I think it can depend on the golfer to be honest. If you are someone who really smacks the ball one then it is going to loose it's shape quickly. If you strike your irons with tons of backspin then it will cut up very quickly. I use TM Penta TP balls and they last quite well. Can get 3 or 4 rounds from one if I do not loose it.

The 10 yds difference could bedown to one of the balls landing on a softer piece of ground, or not running out as well. You can't even base it on a carry as both balls have different dimple patterns - or at least that's my guess.

the only thing that concerns me about the pro v's is how chewed up they get.

that and the prov offwhite colour they go has made me change balls this year to Bridgestone B330RX and B330S
yet to have some dry weather to try them on but they better perform as I have 4 dozen:rolleyes:

Interesting thoughts.

I feel that surely the core can only take so many baterrings and would lose performance, you can back this up by saying why do the Pro's use about 6 balls (on average) per round. Why do tennis players change balls? same with squash etc etc.

In terms of the Srixon being harder, I dont know, all I know is that they are both 3-piece balls.

Interestingly I have just bought a dozen TaylorMade Penta's and look forward to giving them a blast as I've heard a lot of good things.

If we all hit the ball with the optimum swing speed,in the exact centre of the clubface ,played at the optimum temp,in windless conditions, and putted on greens made of polished glass, then yes i'd be concerned about ball condition.
If my Pro V's are still round, don't have chunks missing, and are clean, they'll do me,and i couldn't care less whether its a mid winter, mid week practice round with mates,or a monthly medal in high summer.
