How do Pro shops works in relation to revenue for the actual golf club? Does the Pro rent the shop from the club? Do the club take a cut of any products sold or lessons sold? Is it a club to club thing rather than a general rule?

My Wife asked the other day and I couldn't answer her.........

Your answers, as ever, appreciated.

We pay our Pro a retainer (a nice sounding word meaning a small fortune), and then he earns more money giving lessons, and also what he makes on stuff he sells. This is why he is considerably richer than me.

I dont know how are shop pro gets paid, all i know is its unreliable. Two reasons brought a pair of FJ Dryjoys split after 4 rounds pro didnt want to give me another pair until "he got another oppinion" laughable,i told him i would never buy anything off him again so he gave me another pair, split after two rounds gave me full refund[but what a hassle].Also went in on a wednesday and ask for some pro champ spikes but they were not in stock he told me they would arrive on friday i went in he told me they wouldnt arrive till tuesday[to bloody late for weekend].Also ask for some advice on gloves for the wet he told me the FJ would be the best and advised i would need l&R gloves i asked why he said they work better together.Fine,he called me in saying my gloves had arrived but only the left, right out of stock,f-----g useless shop.

Most pros are on a retainer which I guess is varies from club to club and then they make money on the stock and lessons. Don't forget though that it's the pro who has to stock the shop and also pay out for sundries like assistants wages. Some clubs I know even bill the pro for the electricity. It was something I'd always fancied doing but I do know from working as an assistant that its not always as cushy as it appears.

I have always wondered how the system works as well. I had a lesson at the weekend and we got on the subject and he more or less confirms what is being said here. I did not know the Pro has to pay the Assistants wage though is this definitely correct ?

Each club treats its Professional differently. In my particular case the Pro is paid a retainer of an approx. 20K. He may take lessons at whatever fee he decrees. He sells all types of equipment at whatever profit he wishes and can make. He has telephone, heating, electricity paid for by the club. He may take a percentage of all green fees and competition fees that go over his counter (maybe 10%)

He is in the process of, at this very moment having a brand new shop being built at a cost of at least 150K, paid for by the club. He employs someone or even family to look after his shop whilst he is able to go and give lessons at further education colleges and local education authorities. He has a closed shop as far as prizes for competition prizes are concerned, runs two's competitions for balls giving only less than two pounds per ball. And of course has a reserved car space three strides from his place of work. Provided he does not make advances to the Captain's wife he has a job for life virtually.

Playing off about a six handicap he has a bobbies job!! But he does have unsociable hours.

If you can be a Pro at a 6 Handicap the I have only 10 shots to shed and I will be hiring myself out :D Seriously though is it not +6 although this does seem very low. The Pro I take lessons from is a +3 Handicap

Our club pro is in serious need of a personality transplant. You never get him the same way, most of the time he`s a torn faced *BEEP*.
Everything seems to be a problem too him.
Personally I cant understand it, because if he was more pleasant and helpful I sure he would make more sales etc. I was given a voucher for 2 playing lessons as a xmas gift in 2008. Honestly could`nt face being in his company for that length of time. A lot of other members feel the same way. :D :D
His young assistant is the exact opposite, pleasant manner, chatty and most of all extremely helpful :) :)

Until you mentioned assistant I thought we were members of the same club last year :D

'The Pro I take lessons from is a +3 Handicap'

Eh ???? Surely if he's a Pro, he's Scratch, and thats it. ??????
Otherwise, he's an Amateur off +3 ?

I know our Pro has a fairly tidy 'retainer', and assume that all he makes from the Shop is his.
However, he's not even 'interested' in giving lessons anymore.....which leads me to think the retainer is too damn much !

I just asked him what he played to and he said +3 I presume that is what he was when he turned Pro and just quotes that as his standard.

I don't think it was in that context TBH as it was several lessons in and we just touched on the subject of Handicaps and I asked him outright what his was and he told me. Obviously if a group of Pro's are playing in a comp then they all go off Scratch.
