Pro shops closing

Correct but I get a lot from my local pro that I couldn't get from a retailer.

But I know my pro would happily let me have the shoes then and there and pay the extra later when I could afford it - because it's all about the personal choice.

That's fine mate,personally I'd go rather save a Tenner.
Let's be honest the Pro is on a much higher hourly rate & doesn't have to work half as hard as a lot of people. So let's not overly play them violins

But I need shoes now not in 2 weeks time.....
Not arguing about using the Pro if you can....but by going through the price match routine the Pro is cutting his margins.
If he has to keep cutting them he will eventually reach the point of losing money,at which point he will close.
You play at a big club, it has a lot of affluent members who won't worry about a driver costing 15 quid more than it would 10 miles away at AGMK. Your shop ain't gonna close.... Your Pro can price match to an extent but probably doesn't need to fully match them.
Less affluent clubs, with less affluent members who need cheaper deals, are the ones at risk.
And it's a significant number of Clubs and members in that position that is causing shops to close

At my old club it was the same and he offered the same personal service and still would now if I went to get something from him

If I needed the shoes now he would let me have them then pay the extra later

I have purchased two shafts from a local pro - haven't paid for them yet until i decide with the help of his flight scope which one is best for me - he even got the tips and changed the grip at no extra cost. That sort of service is invaluable - can't put a price on it and you don't get it from the retailer - it's not from Woburn but it's from a local pro that have supported through the years. He goes that little bit extra for his customers. Plenty of other stories from many of his customers about his great service.

That's what I get by paying that extra tenner and for me it's worth every penny

Do you know how many hours the pro puts in ? How many days of the week his shop is open - 364 with it only being shut on Xmas Day.

Very few pros seem to have very much business experience which does not help them. I can never understand why, on the equipment side all pros at least at county level don't seem to work together when it comes to purchasing the everyday stuff. 80 plus clubs in Devon is some purchasing power when it comes to balls, tees, gloves, bags etc. just needs a bit of thinking through and team work.

I'm glad you have that extra tenner - the point is that a lot of people don't...

Golf isn't a cheap game unfortunately

Possibly if people pay the extra tenner in the long run things might be a bit cheaper with all the added extras you get from a local pro ( the bits you keep ignoring in my posts )

I don't think it's uncommon for them to do that, my pro certainly does and will almost always price match

To get an account with Galvin Green you need order 2000 pounds worth of stock so local pros in the area club together to get one account and then order through that.

Whilst I am ignoring parts of your post that I agree with "if you have the means" you are definitely ignoring the point that people MAY NOT HAVE THAT EXTRA TENNER............

And you are ignoring the point that most local pros will be able to work something out to pay the extra tenner later.

Put we are being very specify here and it's not always about the extra tenner

Many Pros are members of a purchasing group called 'Foremost Golf' Foremost buy in bulk then sell on at competitive prices to their members.

Some of these posts are absolutely ridiculous......!!!
JUST pay an extra tenner £££........!!!.......WHY.......??
Its cheaper round the corner
If £10 notes started falling out my back pocket then I would certainly start noticing that
Im all for supporting the Local Pro, if he is competitive, if not, I buy where I get the best deal......SIMPLE
Its MY Choice
Its MY Money
And right now is hardly the most affluent position Ive ever found myself in

Getting back to the Pro
Id take his Job / Salary now
£20K retainer + 10% of green fees , probably puts him somewhere near UK average wage (27k)
Then he charges £30 per hour for lessons
If he does 6-7 of them per week (not asking a lot) then thats his assistant paid for
We have 3 comps per week, for 7-8 months of the year where he collects 2's Sweep cash straight into the till, so thats guaranteed sales in the shop, at my place that would be (atleast) £250 per week for the 3 comps
So theres another £8k (worth of sales) granted
Not too hard to sell Lucozade, Water, and Choc bars, and profit margins on these are good

So NOT such a bad picture really

And before anybody asks
I DO like my Pro
I DO get on well with My Pro
No cross to bear

But just to add
He drives a better car than most of my pals
He goes abroad golfing atleast 3-4 times per year
And he has time to play MORE GOLF than me and most of my mates

So u wont hear violins here for any Pro
Price Match or NO SALE
Any Profit is better than No Sale

Pretty much sums it up for me, not bad for someone who failed at his original job ambition!

As with any purchase if I can save £10-£20 by shopping around then I will. I wouldn't like to see pro shops closing but I don't owe them a living.
Tbh It never crosses my mind to buy balls, gloves, tees, grips from the Pro shop or AG as I know they're cheaper on eBay.

Dont forget to add P&P

My pro is a good friend and I've known him for many years outside of golf. He always does me a good deal but he's also a member of the Foremost buying group and is able to give a good price on most things and able to price match where possible. I know Hawkeye got a great deal on his clubs and I ALWAYS get my myjoys at a superb price.

If I had any gripes it would be that all the clothing is branded with the club logo. I'd like to be able to buy more stuff but it's a small space and there isn't much room to carry too much stock and my other big gripe is he isn't the best at getting stuff ordered in quickly. He has been in post for over nearly twenty years and so must be doing ok. I know he does quite well playing locally to supplement his earnings but I don't think he's struggling for his next cuppa
