Now that Tigers back and the PGA Tour season has 'started' ;) I noticed a couple of players during coverage and couldn't help but remember the anticipations I had that they would somehow do better than they have.

I was mainly thinking about Fredrik Jacobson. Did anyone else think a few years ago that he would be a Major player and compete in Ryder Cups - of course he still might but he seems to be one of those talents that plod along for want of a better description.

The other is Sean O'Hair. Had a great Rookie season but hasn't done anything since. Is he another cursed by being tagged America's next big thing? Of course he still has time on his side as he's still young but you have to wonder why after such a great start to life on tour he has slipped.

I am not saying they are bad players, I'm just disappoined they aren't being more of a force than they currently are.

The pro game is littered with guys who never quite stepped up to the mark. A glaring example of this from the European Tour was Paul Way back in the 1980's. A glorious talent he was seen as the successor to Langer Faldo et al but never really hit the heights he should have.

There are always journeymen pro's who may win a tournament or have a couple of top 10's and you think "blimey he's doing well" but you know deep down they don't really have the game to smash through to that top level and challenge Tiger, Mickelson Singh etc

I actually never thought Jacobsen was that good. He had a good season or so and was naturally touted as a Ryder cupper and major winner but I never bought into that. Perhaps the biggest example in the modern game of a player flattering to deceive is Garcia

OK I grant you that he is a stalwart of the Ryder Cup but he hasn't exactly set the European Tour alight with multiple wins each season. He surely now has had his run at the majors and perhaps the British Open last year was the fianl proof that when the pressure is on the game was not good enough.

I actually like Sergio. He is always open in interviews and comes across as a happy individual (and with all that money so he should) but in the final assessment I think he lacks the killer instinct of a Tiger or Mickleson

I'll be interested to see how that Spanish guy who was the first Amateur to win on the European Tour will do. What was his name again? Martin I think.

Was hoping to see some Scots do well. Marc Warren seems o be our best bet for the future but he does blow hot and cold!!

In a roundabout way Ernie Els - only 3 majors in 18 and a bit years as a pro is not a good return for a man with this much talent and arguably the most fluid swing in the game.
Ernie has just come through his mid to late thirties when players are often at their best without a single major. It's five and a half years since the Open win.
If he finishes his career with less than 8 majors it's a massive underachievement!

What about Colin. M? He should have won a major, Sergio he should be competing for more major victories instead of his putting going AWOL

Ernie is a superb golfer but I dont think he has 8 majors in him.

Are the big name players as good as they used to be with the exception of woods.
woods wins at least 4 tournaments a year while only playing a limited amount of tournaments so he has a great/greatest percentage of wins per tournament played, the other big names ernie, mickelson and singh struggle to win more than 3 tournaments a year.

I might be wrong but i would have thought the best of past generations would have had a better win percentage compared to the current crop, So are all the players underachieving?

totally agree. Ernies problem is he chose to go see Leadworse and ruin that beautiful one plane swing.

Although monty hasnt won a major you cant be unhappy with his perfomamce on ryder cup and order of merit wins, i think hes more a success than a disappointment.

Boys I have to disagree. Look how many seconds he has had to Tiger. Ernies problem is that he plays in the era of the most dominant player, love him or loath him, that the world has seen.

Unfortunately big Darren Clarke gets my vote. Being a local guy and with his record in youth and amateur competions we all thought he was the one. I know he has had his problems off the course, but even before this he was just turning up lifting a good wage and going to the next tournament. Yes he has won 2 world golf events and has beaten Tiger head to head but we'd all love to see more of him and winning alot more than he does.

Maybe Rory will be our next big thing.
