I might have the chance to play in a charity Pro Am in a few months. I've never played in such an event and was wondering if anyone could give me a heads up on what's involved. I believe I would be assigned a handicap of 22, which is about right on a good day but low for the frequent bad ones!

I'm not bothered about the competitive element but was wondering about how its scored, do our teams scores combined with the pros count together? do we need to play off the championship tees? I've literally no clue.

Cheers

Pro-ams are often played as best net score on each hole from the group. It is expected the pro contributes a solid score and some of you pop up with a net birdie here or there. Usually if you are hacking your way down a bole you can pick up. Pros vary a lot in terms of the amount of interaction they will have with you. Some are great fun and entertaining company, others not You will normally play off mens white tees and the pro will either be the same or a set further back.

Am I reading this right.
You are playing in a Pro Am and do not have a handicap.
Or
Are you waiting to be awarded a handicap.

Very important that you check with the organisers as playing in a Pro Am without a kosher handicap is a big NO NO.
[As Chris Evans found out!]

I don't have a handicap and I'm not currently a member so now way of getting one.

I've just double checked the entry form, it states:

"*If players do not have handicap a handicap of 22 will be awarded to men and 36 to ladies"

but will double check with the organisers before we book, two of the three in our "team" don't have official handicaps but it is a charity event so normal rules which apply to Pro-ams might have been relaxed as a result.

I have never played in a pro am that doesnt require a current handicap cert.... because after all whats stopping a single figures player saying he is off 22

Seems controversial :) do pros really care about pro ams? Surely if their winning or losing is dependant on the amateurs they are drawn to play with then its not something they can be judged on either way? I kinda thought that the pros scores would determine an individual pro winner.

I don't think Pros care too much about playing a in Pro Am but nearly all that I know guard their reputation strongly.
BPR...most pro ams are won by the ams.

Last Pro Am I played in my two amateur partners scored better that our big jessy Pro and we finished well down the field.

Pro ams are 2 comps in one.
The team comp is normally the best 2 nett scores to count on each hole (from am OR pro)
The pro also keeps his or her own score for the whole round and prizes are given for the pro scores only.

most pro ams are won by the ams.

I'm sure the pros make some contributions to the team score
