Open comps often give cash (or voucher) prizes in both scratch and handicap categories....

How much should first scratch receive in relation to first handicap, and why?

As been said many times - amateur club golf is about a level playing field and rewarding the players that play best relative to their handicap

A very very small percentage in clubs can win the best gross - everyone has the chance of winning best nett

What sort of comp are you asking about?

Monthly medal, open comp, club champs. Answer is different for each but if you just mean everyday comps then more for Nett for me as its fully inclusive

An irrelevant question for 99% on here. We can't win the scratch. Same with club championships. Not got a prayer of ever winning scratch which is why have a handicap. If a club is holding an open event why should the prize funds be different?

If there is a scratch prize, it should be higher than the handicap prize in my opinion, the scratch winner is after all the best player on the day.

Has to be the handicap prize as the scratch prize is only limited to a few and for that reason the handicap should be higher

Depends entirely on the competition. If it's a scratch open that also has a handicap prize then the scratch should be bigger. Likewise, if it's a handicap competition with a scratch prize, the handicap prize should be bigger.

For a club monthly medal, handicap prize should be the better one as it's a handicap competition.

Seems a bit of a strange poll TBH.

Not irrelevant at all, this impacts everyone who enters an open. It's about how the prize fund for an open comp should be distributed. Should the best golfer get more or the best net since realistically more entrants have a chance of winning it, or should it be the same?

I stood on the 1st tee on Saturday believing I could win the gross. On Sunday, my only aim was to shoot lowest gross on the day. To do either, I would have had to shoot a PB 2 days running but those were my aims. I failed miserably but it will be the same next year. I honestly don't care about the handicap prize.

tbh it depends on who it is targetting. If its fully open, then for me split it 50:50, if its targetted as a scratch comp then 100% scratch if its targetted at mid to higher handicappers make it 100% nett

ive played in ones that are gross only and 50:50 gross and nett, dont mind either albeit i have little to no chance in gross

Yeah, cos we're all about logic and rationality in here. We've changed the distribution for our open and while I understand the reasoning I disagree with decision. I know how our committee members voted and am just interested in what folk on here think. Not a big deal, I'm not interested in prize money personally.

Sorry, wasn't having a pop. Just seems an obvious answer to me based on the type of competition.

Maybe I'm just applying some of that logic ;)

Fully open, probably very few low handicaps playing. You can only win one prize so nobody can win both first scratch and first handicap.

Most senior open comps have the lowest net h/c winner, who gets a trophy and voucher. Then 1,2,3 [4] in each cat, also scratch prizes in each cat , some clubs work it by age cats some use h/c's.
The scratch prize is usually the same amount as the 1st prize in each section.

Depends on if it's a scratch Open or one for all HC's
