I heard today that Private Golf Courses in the USA are to open their doors to pay and play golfers . Do you think it will happen over here, if it has'nt all ready. And am I alone in thinking that we should boycot these clubs on the grounds that when their rich members are spending their cash they would'nt let us common people set foot on their course in case we left a bad smell(or worse),but now their members can't afford to prop the club up they expect us common golfers to bail them out of there financial crisis. You can expect them to ban the lot of us once again when we have helped them out of their financial crisis, and their members bank balances are rising again.

Not sure what to say on this one. I think it'll happen here eventually. I already know a few clubs that have had to relax rules and even dress codes in the bar.

I wouldn't boycott them though as I'm sure i'll want to play a few.

The recession if definitely good for golfers, aslong as we've kept our jobs of course.

Welcome to the forum.

Anyone has always been welcome to pay and play at my club, so dont know what you are talking about ??

Yes, our Car park can be full of very expensive motors, and thats because its one of the very best Clubs/Courses in the area.

However, you are free to hand across about £40 of your hard earned pounds and play 'our' superb and manicured course.
Or, you can pay peanuts to play a 'municipal' .....

Its all up to you.

I believe that the high end private members clubs are really feeling it over here to.

Loch Lomond is struggling and I believe a few up in Scotland are actually shutting down.

Mr Trumps big course in Aberdeen has been scaled down according to some articles I've read.

Maybe we should sqaut on Loch Lomond and open it up to the people :D

I fail to see why you want to boycott any of these such clubs and give up the chance of playing on some fabulous courses.

As ChrisMc has already said, you pay peanuts to play on a muni course with greens that arent fit to be fairways on 'decent' courses, i'd gladly pay more to play on courses that are taken care of by green keepers who know what they're doing.

Welcome to the forum by the way! :D

It all seems to come down to what you think you are paying for when you pay your membership fees i guess - If its exclusivity then this will upset you, If you just want to play golf I don't suppose you will care to much unless you cant get on your course or the time taken to get round starts to increase. I would welcome the chance to play on some of the more exclusive courses in the world

There are so few courses that are closed to visitors, or ever have been.
Sure Loch Lomond is one, but its very very rare, you can pay and play on even the very best in the country, or abroad, IF you are prepared to pay.

Even Valderama and San Lorenzo in Portugal, which are amongst the very best, are open to all of us.

Quite why you would boycott any that arent currently available is beyond me, but there again, I doubt most of us could afford them anyway.

Loch Lomond used to give times to the SGU a few years ago it was £300 per 4 ball these were then dished out to clubs and each club got 1 time if i remember, i manged to play it twice and you got treated the same as everyone else but it was always empty. Not being a snob i couldnt go back to play a muni the ones beside me used to be pretty decent but the council spends money in other ways. On one of the courses it wasn't unusual to find burnt out cars in the fairways

I would view it as a chance to play somewhere where I couldn't previously.

I do wish the prices would come down though. I am playing The Grove again on Sunday, for the bargain price of £95, and apparently I get a free sandwich thrown in. Their generosity astounds me.

Private Club in my area wont even open the gates unless you are a member. friend of mine played with a member and said staff very friendly but members looked down there noses at him and he would not go back. Maybe this is a one off judging by the replies.
Thanks for the welcome

as has been said further up the reality is you can play nearly every course in the UK & Ireland

Queenwood is about the only one that is strictly members and guests only (ie no corporate or society days)

They have always refused GM access to asses for Top 100 although Jezz has played it as a guest of a member who is mates with one of of industry contacts hence the invite by proxy

Thats a disgrace, if there not prepared to give you access then i wouldn't give them free publicity in a top Golf Mag.

But it is of no use to them anyway surely? If they are not accepting green fees, they get no publicity advanatge, it would purely be for the benefit of readers to know whether it was a course worthy of being talked about.

Echt, most if not all courses in the top 100 are avaible for us to pay and play even though some of the green fees are high, whats the point in reviewing something we can't try?
