Thanks, does this need a cd drive to setup?

I'm using a Macbook Pro and i don't really want to buy a cd drive just to install the printer.

just paper, or photo printing? Multi function? ie, scanner and copy too? (to be honest, i thought i would not need a MFC, but its been invaluable!) Saying iphone and ipad, assume you will want a wireless one too.

I have a HP, its great, toner is not extortionate and prints paper and photos very well.

have a think about running costs and what you are printing

Is it just black n white documents? then consider a B & W laser printer.

Will you need to copy/ scan? Consider an all in one inkjet

Main manufacturers: HP = great quality, but inks are expensive and they tend not to like refilled cartridges.

Canon = Good quality, inks a bit cheaper than HP, again prefer genuine Canon inks.

Epson= This would be my choice, normally happy to take anything cartridge world can throw at it

Brother= pretty good

Lexmark= Inks can be pricey

Dell= Re-badged Lexmarks, inks horribly expensive.

always try to get separate ink carts, ie dont get one that has a "Colour" and a black as one chamber of the colour cart can run out when there is loads left in the other chambers, but you have to replace the whole lot

You dont need a CD, just visit the manufacturers website and download the drivers for your model and operating system

and whatever you buy, make sure it is compatible with your mac OS

Cheers Frag, I only need to print a few documents in black some I'm not too bothered about colour printing.

Is there a particular Epson model you'd recommend?

I would recommend Brother printers
You can buy a colour print/scan/copy job for less than £100
Comes with multi toner cartridges, last a long time and not too expensive to replace

Second that. I've had home Epson & HP and my latest Brother all-in-one is excellent.

If printing from Mac, get a printer that supports AirPrint (although not totally essential).

Espon for me- the cheapest to refill.

Considered getting a laser printer because we print a lot of documents but even at that it isn't worth it.

We have a XP-305 and whilst it was a bit clunky and the driver for Windows was rubbish, it works flawlessly with Mac Pro which 'found' the printer wirelessly and downloaded the driver automatically.
