Local rules are generally:

Lift, clean and replace in any closely mown area through the green; club length not nearer hole etc.

My drive yesterday carried 202x and plugged at least an inch in the very wet fairway of an adjacent hole - fair old slice.

Was I wrong to lift, clean and replace?

Am I also right in saying that if you ball plugs in ANY part of the golf course (excluding Hazards) you may pick and drop ?

Oh, and unless you have very short clubs, normally the pick and place is within 6", not one club.

Murph
My Club is quite short - only nine holes but the rule is one club length :)

Its best to check local rules for this, some clubs only allow 6" but no nearer the hole. Also some local rules only refer to plugged balls, where other local rules mean PCP after any shot. Its worth being sure as my mate found when his ball landed picked up a lump of mud but wasnt plugged, he cleaned it and placed only to get a penalty as the rule only applied to plugged balls.Generally it refers to a ball on fairway regardless of being plugged or not, but CHECK!

This is another feature of golf in this country that I can't get my head around. My previous golf was in SA and there it was preferred lies all year round. Why? Because they'd rather have you sweep the ball neatly off the fairway than trying to dig it out of a divot. And - why not?
