Does anyone else get a little frustrated watching the pros when they miss the fairway by miles and land where the gallery is. The marshals move the people back and hey presto! the guys have a near-perfect lie.

When I miss the fairway by that much it costs me at least one, maybe two shots!

Why don't they introduce a local rule that the player has a free drop, not nearer the hole, but in an area where the crowd hasn't been?

Or am I just a jealous golfer?

Luck of the game landing on a trampled area, Tiger Woods gets the crowd to roll boulders (loose impediments...yeah right) out of the way for him!
Your idea would just make the game take longer, we dont need that, you've trampled rough all the way along say a 450 yard hole so determining what was trampled and what wasn't would be impossible

if you hit your ball that far off line, you probably wouldn't find it. the pros have spotters and the crowd to tell them where their wayward shots have landed...

that in itself, must save the pros a fair number of shots, and a hell of a lot of money each year.

dont they get free balls? :D
ps - I'll get me coat

Its the rub of the green. If you go offline you have to take the bad lies with the occasional good one. The pros can get a good lie from the crowds having walked there but I've seen numerous occasions especially in the wet where it has actually made the lie harder as the ball is in trampled mud. Of course they do get an advantage with everyone spotting for them but its doesn't stop even Woods losing a ball (British Open)

The best golfers in the world have unfortunately earned this right in the same way the best footballers don't have to play on bumpy park pitches like I used to (wembley excepted :))
