playing a scratch medal yesterday, when a playing partner, dropped his ball after putting out and was about to take a practice putt when i advised him not to, as an ex captain had DQed him self for doing that.
he advised me that he could according to the rules, to which i agreed, but i said i believed it was a local rule, that i believe many clubs employ.
after a chat with the pro, he said we do not have a local rule, and he could have had a practise putt.
what does your club do? and are you sure?

Rule 7 Practice 7-2 During Round
"A player must not make a practice stroke during play of a hole.
Between the play of two holes a player must not make a practice stroke, except that he may practice putting or chipping on or near;
a. The putting green of the hole last played.
b. any practice green.
c. the teeing ground of the next hole to be played in the round, provided a practice stroke is not made from a hazard and does not unduly delay play (Rule 6-7)."

So you can pracice putting on the same green after you have putted out. It is not a local rule.

thanks clive
i agree and was aware, but several people said i couldnt, so i presumed it was a local rule, which is permissable, just shows that i should be aware when i am informed of a ruling

Carry a pocket copy of the rule book at all times and if anyone challenges you to a rule give them the book and ask them to show you where the rule is.
