I feel 99.9% sure about this but a nagging doubt so worth checking for future reference!

4BBB stableford competition and everyone has holed out on the 8th green. No-one behind so I took a practice putt on the green (see thread about Srixon Soft Feel!!) before moving to the 9th tee.

Ok under Rule 7-2?

7-2. During Round

A player must not make a practice stroke during play of a hole.

Between the play of two holes a player must not make a practice stroke, except that he may practice putting or chipping on or near:

a. the putting green of the hole last played,

Note 2: The Committee may, in the conditions of a competition (Rule 33-1), prohibit:

(a) practice on or near the putting green of the hole last played, and

(b) rolling a ball on the putting green of the hole last played

You are generally allowed to practice chipping and putting between holes or on the last green played, as per rule 7-2, as long as this does not unduly delay play. However you need to check the conditions of the competition, as this is sometimes banned for strokeplay competitions.

Me too although I think it can get slightly murkier in a 36 hole comp?

Nothing murky about it, really. You could have a practice putt on the 18th after holing out and before leaving the green but you couldn't come back later and do so if you have another round to play. You can't practise on a competition course between rounds:

When two or more rounds of a stroke-play competition are to be played over consecutive days, a competitor must not practise between those rounds on any competition course remaining to be played.
(Rule 7-1)

The Committee can make it a condition of the competition, however, that practice is permitted on the course between rounds.

You are permitted to practise putting or chipping on or near the first tee or on a practice area before starting a subsequent round.

Thanks guys. I was worried as another player from the group ahead shouted "no practicing" and then mentioned it again in the clubhouse. One of those moments when I thought I was right and he was wrong but he is ex captain/current board member etc so I then doubted my knowledge! It played on my mind somewhat and as I'm carrying and reducing weight I didn't have a rulebook to confirm one way or the other.

as with all these situations Amanda it's best to ask them to show you the rule they say you have broken:smirk:

I agree. It was such a quick, almost flippant, comment but strikes me he thought I was breaking the rules, especially as he repeated the comment in the clubhouse. I need to have more confidence in my knowledge, but the rules are complex enough to add doubt. I started to wonder was it just matchplay it was allowable in and struggled to recall the pros doing it much apart from in matchplay, but of course they would usually be unduly delaying play!
