Powakaddy discovery stopping quickly

Just bought second hand powakaddy discovery checked motors and foot pedal working fine so replaced the curtis 1203a controller. Seems to be accelerating ok but when you press to end of pedal it stops. I presume it's meant to , but when I take my foot off the pedal it's a severe break.
Is this normal?

They have a footpedal now!!! Never new that as they sold the product o Electrokart and the only I have seen still have hand throttles.

I had the hand throttle version.

When you let go of the throttle the motor brake will kick in fairly quickly. Probably a simple case or remembering to lift off slowly.
