What on earth was Poulter having a go at Molinari about at the China Open today? Poulter just came off a treble bogey and was well upset about something.

Not sure what he was whinging about, but is treble bogey was his own fault, if you are referring to his wild drive into the bushes, he took a drop from the bushes, onto the cart path, 2 club lengths, then as the ball wouldn't come to rest within 1 club length he got a free drop onto the bank, which should have been a further 1 club length, but he took 2, then took his shot and it appears he only realised he had messed up after he had taken the shot. So he was probably a little bit angry with himself.

If he hasn't realised he'll be signing for a card with a score lower than it should be and will be DQ'd

It appears that Poults may have messed up there and indeed incur a DQ, but I still cant understand why he was kicking off at Molinari so much.......
Dont you just love the hole in one prize at 16! Just what every pro wants, a digger lol.

as per his character he will be looking to apportion blame elsewhere for his performance- he's a petulant child at times.

If a ref has noticed Poults mistake, would they speak to him prior to the card being signed or wait until the card was in before bringing it to his attention?

Should let him know before he signs the card

From Twitter -

I'm such a ****** helmet, the most simple rule I had been given the day before. Drop in 2nd club length err wrong 2 shot penalty.

No mention to anything else.

The bold bit doesn't seem right (either)! It's 2 club lengths there, though the fact that it was on a path probably meant he got free relief from where it landed/ended up. and it seems it's that area where he came unstuck - after a couple of '2 club lengths' situations.

Another reason why asking a Pro for a ruling often isn't much better than asking anyone else?

Actually surprised he didn't call for a R/O with all that going on! It may take a little time, but makes a lot of sense in situations like that.

its not up to the ref to keep informing a player if he's breaking a rule (unless asked) as it might be amended on the card with the appropriate penalty added before signing, but he'll certainly note a breach and investigate if the card is marked and signed correctly.

They will do so wherever possible though!

And if a player appears to be about to break a Rule, they will intercede where possible too!

So they are not just passive adjudicators like in some other sports, but are there to help all players get around according to the Rules.

Where a breach is noted, he should certainly point it out to the player in order to prevent a possible DQ. Waiting until after player signs and then applying a DQ for a preventable 'signed for wrong score' is not on!

It may not be up of the ref but they will interact and ensure everything is ok before signing for the card - because golf refs are decent blokes and also golfers them selves

In some tournaments there is but only the main ones ( majors etc )

Normally have around 3 refs per tournament for players to call on

Thanks Phil , , just thinking out loud here ,

I wouldnt be really fair then if a ref interjected to stop a rule been broken without been asked would it ? cept in a major ..? (as all groups wouldnt have that chance )

Just curious
