Just looking for some opinions from those that have played some of the more prestigious courses in my area.

We're looking at treating my father in law to a special golf day for his 60th at the end of September. We live in Surrey and there will be 3, possibly 4 of us playing. Of the 3 definite 2 of us play off 7 and my father in law off 18.

After a bit of a chat with my brother in law and a look at some options, we're thinking of playing an all dayer at one of:
-Walton Heath
-The Berkshire
- St Georges Hill
- Royal St Georges
- Woburn (probably the furthest we want to travel unless we get a deal on an overnighter somewhere)

Originally wanted to do Sunningdale but it's going to be a little out of our price range.

We like the idea of those above (aside from St Georges) as each has more than 1 very good course, so could get a little variety.

So anyone played any of these, or better still a few, and can offer some opinions on which to go for. Or any alternatives we may have missed.

Ta.

My own order of preference based on these would be

The Berkshire (and the best lunch)
St Georges Hill
Walton Heath
Royal St Georges
Woburn

I guess it would depend a lot on budget and what sort of deals you can get to play these. You could add West Hill to that list very easily as well as the other two W's Woking and Worplesdon

Thanks for the reply. The Berkshire is probably my pick, followed by Walton Heath.

Any particular reason you'd put Woburn last?

Woburn is lovely and really well laid out and looked after but the other courses are just that bit better. The Berkshire should be the place you choose IMO

What's your budget for the golf?

Having played them all, I'd go..

Berkshire - Red/Blue is Best Summer's Day golf south of Southport! Especially with Lunch
Walton Heath - Both courses
Woburn - any 2 of the three, they are all great in their own ways.

Those have the distinct advantage of 2 different courses giving variety in the rounds.

St Georges Hill just beats
Royal St Georges (best lunch imo) as 2 rounds on RSG is quite a slog - specially if breezy.

Hankley Common is also highly recommendable!

But The Berkshire is head and shoulders above all but Sunningdale for a day's Golf imo!

Best actual course is RSG imo.

I've played all the courses on your list. Personally I would go for RSG because I'm a links fan but if you prefer an inland course I would go for a day at the Berkshires. All of the courses on your list are top quality and you won't be disappointed by any of them.

At 60 your father in law might not fancy 2 rounds if thats what you mean by a full day.
When i was 60, 1 round with a buggie, a meal and a good swally would have done me nicely. and happy birthday to him.

Haven't played St. George's Hill or Hankley, but I'd pretty much second everything else Foxholer has said here.

I might be inclined to wait until 1st November & get the cheaper rate to do Sunningdale but that's just me. Not sure Walton Heath is much cheaper than Sunningdale. Only other thing I'd add is that Walton Heath only requires a jacket over your golf clobber for lunch (and a change of shoes), as good as The Berkshire is, the whole into a suit at lunchtime and change again for the afternoon is a bit of a pain (but worth suffering).

£220 for the 2 rounds vs £295 for 2 rounds @ Sunningdale.

As BiM mentioned, at £155 for 2 rounds from Nov 1st, Sunningdale's Winter offer looks pretty good value too! Like The Berkshire, the pair are not so long between them that it's the slog that RSG would be. There's not really all that much difference between Old and New at Walton Heath, the Old is just the toughest set of (8) starting holes I know!

Thanks for all the replies. Much appreciated.

FIL knows what the plans are and is ok with 36 holes. We've done it before.

Looks like the Berkshire is the winner so far then. Our budget is about £200 which more or less covers all but sunningdale and Wentworth around here.

I didn't know about the suited and booted for lunch rule at the Berkshire so that's handy to have heard in advance.

Does Walton Heath include any food in that Foxholer? Sunningdale include breakfast & afternoon tea in their price, hence the comment as I don't think Walton Heath does.

Golf Only I believe.

Bacon Rolls are an exorbitant (imo) £3.50 and the buns are very floury! Unlimited coffee (while you admire James Braid's achievements) though.

If you are playing 36 holes, then definitely The Berkshire. The cost of playing both courses is not that much more than just playing 18. Yes, you will need jacket and tie for lunch. Take it easy at lunch though, it is on the huge size. If you were only playing 18 I would go with St Georges Hill, blue and red nines.

Berkshire is a beautiful course

Woburn is also wonderful

But you won't go wrong with any choice

Enjoy

Make sure you get in early for lunch, otherwise some greedy beggars will have eaten all the sticky toffee pudding.

I hope seconds didn't give you indigestion.

I only had the one portion of sticky toffee :D it may have been supplemented by a few other puddings though :D

Not sure if any others only had the one portion - it was tasty after all :D
