God help us all but it seems Autumn is well and truly here again what with the double whammy of X Factor and Celebrity Big Brother back and infesting our screens once more.

I am at a total loss to even try and understand what the merits of a show that is nothing other than a dodgy half baked karaoke competition, complete with crowbarred-in lovable old nanas and recently deceased parents, holds for the nation. Add to that the tabloid dross values of CBB then you have a perfect illustration of what's wrong with Britain today.

When is the viewing public going to get a grip on itself and confine this total tripe to a manky old skip on the back lot of TV Land.

I imagine that scarcely does a day go by when Cowell doesn't pinch himself very hard indeed, scarcely able to comprehend that he has yet to be finally rumbled yet somehow continue to get away with peddling such low-rent drivel to the masses.

Take heart from the fact that they're both on commercial stations meaning you don't have to endure those evil, evil, adverts

They are continually on the telly because millions others like watching them

The good thing with television is there is always another channel and will be something on that someone likes.

X Factor has produced some very talented and success artists so it can't be all bad

Nurse, Johnny isnt taking his medicine :)

Whilst it isn't everybody's cup of Earl Grey, someone must be watching, paying to vote etc otherwise it wouldn't be on our screens.

You do have the option of watching " Dave" or "Movies For Men" or even the ultimate sanction of the Off button :)

:D:D

Take your point, although I honestly won't watch either, but I really just despair that the default position of broadcasters is to feed us dross and expect us to suck it up.

In the run-up to Christmas I will most probably spend my time reading Proust and listening to Mahler to be honest. :)

I think it's sad that people think it's 'cool' to rant on about programs like this, like they are somehow above it.

It's light entertainment. If you don't find it entertaining then thankfully there's plenty of other channels to choose from.

There's a lot of them that I don't like, so I don't watch them. I do like and watch X-Factor and the jungle one. The Mrs watches Strictly and the ice dancing one which I don't find bad.

If anyone thinks that says something bad about me, or that I am somehow lacking in intelligence, then I am pleased that they won't want to spend any time with me.

I'd tentatively argue that...
Its a sad state of affairs when all you can find that's worth watching is Sky Sports News and then only because Kate Abdo's on....
Personally speaking, 99% of TV is worthless drivel....

I don't buy into the people watch it cos it's good argument with a lot of Saturday night telly shows tbh. You could put any talentless buffoon or tap dancing dug on prime time on a Saturday night and you'd get millions watching it...........oh, wait...they do.

Speaking personally I don't think that I'm above it in any way at all. I simply choose not to be sucked in by the hype.

For me, and taking the karaoke show as an example. it's all about Simon Cowell furthering his own entertainment empire. Nothing more, nothing less. To try to dress it up as meaningful television is simply disingenuous marketing piffle.

Not a fan of the above mentioned programs so I take the sensible option and don't watch them.

It is a bit of a pain when Social Media is flooded with comments about them though.

This, to a certain extent, is the bit that always gets me about these shows. If I'm going to sit down and watch a TV show, I'd like to see sportspeople, singers, dancers, actors, comedians etc, who have learned their trade, earned their success, and who are at the top of their game. Not amateurs. I know that people on X-factor and the like aren't necessarily talentless (not including BB in that statement, obviously) but really I'd like them to go away for 5 years and come back when that raw talent has turned into something worth watching. Or, in the case of the celebrity versions of shows, I'd like to watch them actually doing the thing that they are famous for and good at.

Having said that, dogs are a definite no, but tap dancing dugs? I'd watch that :D

I'm also not a fan of these programmes but accept that lots of people obviously do. What does annoy me, however, is when the news reports who got eliminated or whatever.... THAT'S NOT NEWS!!!!

I use all the crap telly programs as an excuse to spend more time at the range during the winter evenings

Aaaahhh Kate Abdo.

Strictly,Saturday night take away & BGT are shocking TV shows.

Box sets are the way to go.

Having said that, X factor will more than likely be on our TV this Saturday as my 7yr old likes it.
But Caroline Flack should make it more bearable.

The big break on the golf channel is a good reality program. I'll watch I'm a celeb too.

If you dont like it, dont watch it....

Jeez, you could have told me this before I got put in your group at Oakmere Park you thick chav. On Saturday evenings I watch documentaries on BBC 4 or foreign crime dramas that have to be subtitled or I am not interested;)

TBH anyone ranting or complaining about the X Factor and BB is about 5 years too late, both programs now have dwindling viewing figures as audiences are beginning to tire of them to a certain extent and they have mostly run their course.

My TV has got hundreds of channels, I'm not forced to watch anything I don't want to*, I have nothing force-fed to me*, nor am I expected to suck anything up*

If you don't want to watch it, dont watch it, simple.

*other than by the wife and daughter who love Strictly.......

It's interesting that the "don't watch if you don't like" comment usually comes out in these kind of discussions.

I started this thread in the full knowledge that I don't have to watch if I don't like - well here's the thing - I don't like so I don't watch. No-one forces me to keep the shows on - honestly - I know where the off / channel change buttons are.

What I find irritating is that the mass media goes into overload and the flaming things are almost totally unavoidable in one way or another. ITV in particular floods many of its other programmes ( even the news sometimes) with so-called items on X Factor that are nothing less than plugs for the show. And as for newspapers and magazines...cah!!

It's only a karaoke competition with somewhat higher production values than what you might find down The Dog and Duck.

*Puts Mahler on CD and dons velvet smoking jacket*
