My club had a seniors medal last week on a reasonably nice day when the winning score was a nett 75 and second place was a nett 79. The course SSS is 71, so needless to say it was a 'Reductions Only' comp (again!). I was playing in a match that day and was approx 4 over my handicap (nett 76) which was good enough to win the match with a bit of help from my partner. So I probably would have been 2nd in the medal with a not particularly good score!

There seems to be a classic Catch 22 situation in Seniors comps, where many of the players have handicaps which due to the aging process they are no longer able to play to. Hence the poor scores and R/O comps, which means their handicaps can't go up, even by a paltry 0.1!

Isn't there going to be an ESI (increase), so they can go up if they have a certain number of consecutive 0.1s?

Well looking at HDID it's not really a regular occurrence and it was a CSS of 74 ( par 72 ) and lots got .1 for half the field having an NR ?

Most of the other senior comps appear to have CSS the same as par and even below par this year ?

Yes. As from next year, 7 consecutive 0.1 increases will trigger a handicap review. Not quite sure what the position will be for R/O comps.

Reductions Only means just that! Only those who score below the CSS will get handicap cuts. Everyone else stays the same!

Seems to me that the Catch 22 is that's it's a young person's game, mainly played by old people

The more time we get to play, the harder it gets.
:D

Please read the original post where the Course SSS is stated! :)

So since May you have had a couple of RO when the fields seem small and people struggle

Those scores will be looked at by the system when the AR comes around and players affected by RO on a semi regular basis will have their HC adjusted

Same with a lot of courses that have high CSS compared to the SSS.

Actually about half of our senior qualifiers have been R/O's this year, even in quite benign conditions. I mostly only play in senior comps these days, so my scores are being compared with unnaturally high CSS's. This was the cause of my famous ESR a few years ago, and my handicap is probably one or two shots lower than it would be if I only played in general club competitions!

"Famous" :rofl:

It looks like most of the RO happen in the winter/spring months when the course prob plays long for seniors - which is natural

Why don't you play in general club comps then - that will solve your issue for you.

Maybe the club should look at playing senior comps of a shorter measured course during the winter months ?

We could play off the yellow tees, but they reduce the SSS to 70, so the problem would remain!

At the last Annual Review, about 5 players were given 1 shot back and a couple were cut. That was about it! Most player's handicaps didn't change.
Why the roll eyes ?

That seems the normal annual review result.

How many were recommended to have increases? Without knowing that, it's not really possible to make much of a valid comment ... but I'm assuming you think that loads more should have had an increase. If that's the case, and there were many many more that were recommended but didn't get the increase then that'll be a club problem, and nothing at all to do with the system in place.
