Hi all, first post,

I'm not new to golf but I'm a very very casual player.
Usually I play about 5-6 times a year and have real trouble as I'm 6'8 but use standard length clubs. Until recently my best round is about 105(terrible I know) my average round would be about 113. I played the other day and from no where was striking fantastic, did not mis cue or top anything and ended up with a 92, which was only that high as I'm a terrible chipper. Would have probably been 85 or lower if my chipping was solid. I never used to carry a driver as I couldn't hit it but it's been going great. Although when I try and add distance I goes heavily right. I'm wondering if this is likely to be poor technique or because I have a Chicago golf beta titanium matrix driver that I got for free. Is it worth getting a new driver?

Also I have been to my local par 3 9 hole course that ranges 100-168yrd holes. Is it better to practice chipping there or just play more full rounds?

Any advice apreciated

If you are really keen to improve, you should visit a good pro for lessons and advice on clubs.

Well if you are hitting 92 you are a better man than I am!!

There is obviously a natural talent there, which if you played more regularly would get your handicap down sharply.

This game is all about practice, practice then a bit more practice

I often go over to the par 3 course and have a session, you can also book chipping lessons or you can just do 20/30/40 yard chips letting other people through when they want to play.

you need to find out how far you hit your different clubs, I went to a local field with a dozen balls, marked my start area, hit the balls with the same club. marked the centre of the group and paced back to the start mark, repeat with each club

What you need to do is to get the bug, then get custom fitted then join a club

Just get out there and play

Welcome to the forum, we are a friendly bunch, happy to help
There are some very good golfers on here

Enjoy

92 is about my average score give or take a few(usually give :(), so you are clearly capable. My thinking is it's your set-up for the drives causing the slice and the chipping is all about practice. welcome aboard :D
ps - we all leave half a dozen shots out on the course ;)

Sounds like you had a great round mate.

Best bet is to see a Pro for a few lessons to maintain the sweet shooting.
Play and practice regularly, get an official handicap then spend the rest of your life trying to lower it. It works for some people............alas not me......yet!

My advice echoes the others in that a few lessons (most pros give a discount on a block booking) will give you a solid foundation. If you decide to become something more than a casual golfer and play more regularly, you might want to look at a custom fitting as for your height I reckon you'd need longer than standard clubs to make the technique your lessons will develop easier to maintain

trying to add distance will do it. usually, at least with me, it means swinging harder and faster so I get completely out of sync.
smooooth is the way (so I'm told) - easy to say hard to do.
