Must admit im a bit surprised at the findings .. Stroke play for me .. mind you im a bit of a me and my handicap kinda golfer ,,

I do enjoy match play tho just prefer stroke play and strokes over stableford

Prefer to compete against the course & a field of players... rather than just that dude over there in the knee length socks standing in the wrong place noisily reorganizing his bag to free up his alignment sticks who hasn't even put his glove on yet cos he's using a rangefinder on a par 5 tee and his mallet hands cant work the buttons so he keeps lasering the distance to his feet while chucking grass in the air even though his brolly is hurtling down the fairway while telling me that last time out he birdied this hole (or at least he would've if he hadn't taken three off the tee) in between mouthfuls of dried fruit and nut sweepings molded into a cereal bar that he needs to eat on the 12th so he has the energy benefit on the 15th for the home stretch because Tiger does it that way and isn't it a shame about Rory and by the way do I remember this is a two shot hole for him even though he's been stiffing them from 100 yards all day and what was it I scored on the last two holes cos he cant remember if he's up by 3 or 4!

I voted strokeplay

Really enjoy having our winter league as being a matchplay comp, plus competing in the summer knockouts is great fun, however you still can't beat the feeling of beating an entire field at strokeplay.

i enjoy both immensely, in the same way as stableford and medal as strokeplay formats.

variety is the real key; with good company ultimately deciding just how enjoyable the day is

I enjoy matchplay but stroke play is the measure of a golfer, IMO.

The bit in bold is a great description and goes for me too.

I like both but get more satisfaction from winning strokeplay where you know you've really played to the best of your ability in order to win the competition.
In matchplay you can win but have played like a dog.

(But then I suppose there is that very rare matchplay tie where both players have been on the peak of their game and fought tooth and nail to the 18th or beyond, I've never had a match like that but that would probably be the ultimate for me.)

there's some really  stuff in this post! really

if I can try and extend it a little, where matchplay can have that extra edge is in requiring you to play to a level beyond your immediate comfort zone - knowing that you have to do it to win. (this isn't about 250 yd approach shots over water it's more about chipping in, sand saves and putts!)

the only real parallel in stroke play events is a playoff.

it's the emotional engagement, but with direct feedback/reward! stroke play can be just as demanding (possibly more so) and certainly draining, but at the end of the day, you can never really know if you have done enough - only that you've done your best.

so I'm now voting matchplay - it's got the edge!

Playing the course is nice, but sometimes it has the weather on its side as an extra defence so isn't a fair fight. man against man match play is a fair fight against Mother Nature and the course. Bring it on!

Match play for me as well. It just seems to be a stronger test of your all-round golfing ability. Shots you wouldn't usually take on, pressure on every hole.. You can play badly and win, well and lose... I love it..

Always tend to have one or two really bad holes in matchplay I lose 1 hole for each blip which i mofgt win back at the next in stroke play might as well tear card up
