We have a weeks holiday next week staying in Noss May just outside of Plymouth. If weather is decent I might fancy a knock - any thoughts anyone?

Don't really want to travel very far at all - there are a few courses immediately local to Plymouth - any thoughts on these. I'm not really looking for 'great' golf - OK will do as I'll be playing alone (maybe my Mrs will walk round with me) and a nice walk is what she'll be after.

I'll certainly look at St Mellion (what's the Kernow course like - £24 for an after 3pm tee sound good?) as I didn't realise it was quite so close to Plymouth.

East devon is on the way down and would be a lovely walk with the wife.

Bigbury is 21 miles away but would be well worth a visit for the views as well.

China Fleet I would check who else is on the course as it can get chocca,i had 2 rounds and could only get 9 in before I lost the will to live and I hope you have deep pockets as its bloody expensive.

Good to hear Bigbury is worth a visit as we're spending a week there from Friday :-) Found it on the net and picked it as we can take our dogs (converted barns in course grounds) although they can't join us on the course (probably a good thing)!

The Kernow course is ok but if you want a proper test it has to be the Nicklaus. It used to be ranked as the hardest inland course in the UK a few years ago. If you are not a straight hitter be prepared to lose a lot of golf balls.

You have a few to choose from around Plymouth. Wrangaton is a great course just past Ivybridge, front nine is moorland and the back nine is parkland which is always in good condition. Best to book through their website as a guest for the cheapest rates.
Staddon Heights is a course I enjoy playing and again always in good condition with some stunning views over the sound and Plymouth Hoe.
There is always Elfordleigh and Boringdon Park although these I play as a last resort, both are parkland courses although the latter is like going up and down a farmers field, although to be fair it's still in its infancy.
Across the bridge you have China Fleet which is an ok course for the money and then the Kernow at St Mellion which I usually play every couple of months, great mixture of holes and alot of fun.
My personal favourite is Looe golf club, it's a bit further down but always in great condition although the greens can be a bit hit and miss but don't let that put you off, it's a great course. Whichever you decide to play enjoy your stay in Plymouth.

Thanks @morgs - that's a really useful insight, think I'll have a look at Wrangton and Staddon Heights.
